Why This Book Matters

Representation in children’s literature is vital. This story offers a mirror for children who experience neurodivergent traits and a window for those who do not. By normalizing the concept of a 'messy brain,' it helps reduce stigma and builds empathy. Siblings, classmates, and caregivers can gain insight into why a child might react strongly to certain stimuli. The focus is on understanding, not fixing — it validates the child's experience without judgement. Parents and educators find it a valuable tool for creating inclusive environments. Neurodivergent children often feel misunderstood; this book tells them their experiences are valid. It also teaches peers to be patient and kind. The language is inclusive and avoids labels, making it accessible to everyone.

Book Overview

When My Brain Is Messy is a picture book from the Nurturing Neurodivergence Series. Through relatable characters, it explores what happens when the brain feels overloaded — when lights are too bright, sounds too loud, or emotions overwhelming. This story helps children recognise and name these feelings in a safe, engaging way. The simple narrative and warm illustrations make complex topics accessible, offering a starting point for conversations about sensory processing and emotional regulation. The main character experiences their brain as 'messy' during a busy day. With support from a friend, they learn to identify triggers and find comfort. The narrative is simple yet powerful, avoiding jargon and focusing on the child’s perspective.

The Nurturing Neurodivergence Series is designed to provide gentle, affirming stories that help children and families navigate the complexities of neurodiversity. Each book focuses on a different aspect of the neurodivergent experience, offering validation and practical strategies. When My Brain Is Messy is the first title, setting the tone for the series with its compassionate approach and focus on emotional literacy.

How Can This Book Help Start Conversations?

Whether at home or in the classroom, When My Brain Is Messy provides a natural springboard for discussing feelings and differences. After reading, adults can ask open-ended questions like, 'What makes your brain feel messy?' or 'What helps you feel calm?' The book models self-awareness and compassion. It fits well into social-emotional learning (SEL) programmes to teach emotional vocabulary and self-regulation. For siblings of neurodivergent children, it offers an age-appropriate explanation of challenging behaviours. Teachers can integrate it into morning meetings or circle time. Parents can use it as a bedtime story to wind down. The themes align with SEL objectives, such as identifying emotions and practising empathy.

Teaching Empathy and Inclusion

Books like When My Brain Is Messy play a crucial role in teaching empathy and inclusion from a young age. By presenting a character whose experience may differ from their own, children learn to appreciate diverse perspectives. The story encourages readers to consider how others might feel in overwhelming situations and to offer support. It also reinforces the idea that everyone experiences challenges and that asking for help is a strength. Parents and educators can use the book to discuss the value of kindness, patience, and acceptance. The themes are universal, making it a valuable addition to any home or school library.

The Importance of Representation

Children need to see themselves in the books they read. For neurodivergent children, finding stories that reflect their experiences can be empowering and validating. When My Brain Is Messy provides that representation, showing that having a 'messy brain' is not something to be ashamed of, but a part of who they are. It also helps neurotypical children understand and empathise with their peers. In a world that often demands conformity, this book celebrates diversity and encourages all children to embrace their unique ways of thinking and feeling.
