Why Clinicians Rely on This Vestibular Rehabilitation Resource

When it comes to managing patients with dizziness, vertigo, or balance impairments, physiotherapists require a resource that bridges theory and practice. Vestibular Rehabilitation, part of the Contemporary Perspectives in Rehabilitation series, offers just that – a comprehensive, evidence-based guide that has become a cornerstone in the field. Written by Susan J. Herdman and Richard Clendaniel, this hardcover text thoroughly covers anatomy, pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment. Whether you are experienced or a student, this book equips you with the knowledge to make informed clinical decisions.

What Sets This Edition Apart?

The authors have incorporated the latest research and clinical best practices. New chapters address emerging areas such as concussion management and the role of technology like virtual reality in treatment. The book retains its hallmark clarity: diagrams and tables simplify complex material, and case studies connect theory to real-world application. Many call it the “bible of vestibular dysfunction and treatment,” a testament to its authority.

Practical Application for Day-to-Day Practice

For physiotherapists working with dizzy patients, having a reliable reference is critical. This book helps clinicians:

  • Conduct thorough subjective and objective assessments
  • Differentiate between peripheral and central causes of vertigo
  • Select appropriate repositioning manoeuvres for BPPV
  • Design customized exercise programmes for habituation, adaptation, and substitution
  • Monitor progress and adjust interventions based on outcomes

By integrating these principles, practitioners can improve patient outcomes and reduce fall risk. The text emphasizes safety and individualized care.

Core Topics Explored

The book is organized into logically sequenced sections that build from basic science to clinical application. Detailed chapters include:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
  • Mechanisms of dizziness and imbalance
  • Clinical assessment and diagnostic testing (videonystagmography, posturography)
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) – canalith repositioning manoeuvres
  • Unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypofunction
  • Central vestibular disorders
  • Psychological factors and fall risk
  • Treatment planning and exercise progression
  • Outcome measurement and evidence-based practice

Each chapter integrates current research with practical protocols.

Who Will Benefit Most?

Primarily designed for physiotherapists and occupational therapists specializing in vestibular rehabilitation, this text is also highly relevant for physicians (ENT, neurology, physiatry), athletic trainers, and audiology professionals. Graduate physiotherapy students will appreciate the clear explanations and step-by-step illustrations. As one clinician noted, it is “packed with information” and accessible even for newcomers, though a baseline understanding of medical terminology is helpful.

What Practitioners Are Saying

Clinicians consistently praise this book for its thoroughness and readability. One physiotherapist commented that after reading a few chapters, they felt confident treating BPPV. Another described it as invaluable, a must-have for any practitioner working with vestibular patients. The text is often called well-written, detailed, and filled with practical insights. While some noted minor editing issues in tables or figures, the overwhelming sentiment is that this book is essential for any rehabilitation library.

These statements are based on reader feedback. Individual experiences may vary.
