Who Should Read This Book

This practical guide is designed for clinicians working with trauma survivors, particularly those dealing with dissociative disorders. Psychologists, social workers, counsellors, and psychiatrists will find the integrative approach valuable for treating dissociative identity disorder (DID) and other complex conditions. The accessible writing makes it suitable for graduate students in clinical programmes, while advanced content ensures seasoned professionals gain new perspectives. Regardless of your theoretical orientation, this resource offers practical value.

What This Book Covers

Structured to guide clinicians through the entire treatment journey, the volume begins with foundational concepts such as the neurobiology of trauma and the structure of dissociation. Later chapters address assessment, stabilization, trauma processing, and integration. Each section features case examples, clinical tips, and detailed protocols. Common challenges like managing self-destructive behaviours, working with parts of the personality, and therapist self-care are thoroughly explored. The content is both comprehensive and practical, designed for real-world application.

A Comprehensive Resource for Clinicians

Working with clients who experience trauma-related dissociation demands specialized knowledge and a thoughtful, integrative approach. This book offers a step-by-step guide for mental health professionals seeking to deepen their effectiveness. The authors present a model that is compassionate and clinically grounded. Whether you are new to the field or looking to refine your skills, this resource provides practical tools and frameworks.

About the Authors and Their Integrative Approach

Kathy Steele, Suzette Boon, and Onno van der Hart are recognized leaders in trauma and dissociation, known for developing a phased, relational approach that balances safety with therapeutic progress. Their model integrates attachment theory, neuroscience, and practical interventions, making it accessible to clinicians from various orientations. The book reflects their collaborative expertise and commitment to improving care for individuals with dissociative disorders.

Key Features and Clinical Applications

This resource provides clinicians with evidence-based frameworks for assessment and treatment planning. The phased approach emphasizes safety and stability as foundational elements before trauma processing. Readers will find detailed protocols, case illustrations, and guidance on managing complex clinical presentations. The integration of neuroscience with practical clinical wisdom makes this volume suitable for both training and ongoing professional development. Mental health professionals across disciplines will find applicable strategies for their practice.

Important Considerations

Treating trauma-related dissociation is complex and requires ongoing supervision and self-reflection. This book supplements clinical training and experience, not replaces it. Readers should work within their scope of practice and seek consultation when needed. The authors emphasize a phased approach that prioritizes safety and stability before delving into traumatic memories. Use this resource as part of a comprehensive professional development plan.
