Who Should Read This Book?

Touchpoints-Three to Six is ideal for parents of toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary school children. It's also a valuable resource for educators, paediatricians, and mental health professionals working with young children. The book strikes a balance between evidence-based information and empathetic understanding, making it suitable for both first-time parents and experienced caregivers seeking deeper insights. Grandparents, childcare providers, and anyone involved in raising a child during these formative years will find the touchpoints framework transformative.

Key Features of This Parenting Guide

  • Expert Authorship: Dr. T. Berry Brazelton was a world-renowned paediatrician and child development expert, whose work has influenced generations of parents and professionals. Joshua Sparrow, a child psychiatrist, collaborates to update and expand the touchpoints philosophy for modern families.
  • Age-Specific Guidance: The book is divided into sections covering each year from three to six, with detailed discussions on physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. It addresses common concerns like separation anxiety, aggression, and early learning.
  • Practical Strategies: Each chapter includes concrete suggestions for navigating everyday situations, such as morning routines, mealtime battles, and bedtime struggles. The advice is flexible, recognizing that every child is unique.
  • Family and Sibling Dynamics: The book explores how a child's development affects the entire family, including relationships with siblings and parents. It offers insights on managing rivalry and fostering cooperation.
  • Support for Special Circumstances: Sections on adoption, divorce, and other transitions provide thoughtful guidance for families facing additional challenges.

What Is the Touchpoints Approach?

The touchpoints model, pioneered by Dr. Brazelton, identifies predictable periods of rapid growth that often coincide with challenging behaviours. These touchpoints are windows of vulnerability and opportunity. For ages three to six, touchpoints include starting preschool, dealing with fears, and developing a sense of independence. Rather than seeing tantrums or clinginess as problems to fix, the book encourages parents to view them as signs of progress. This perspective reduces anxiety and strengthens the parent-child bond. The approach is grounded in attachment theory and child development research, offering a respectful, child-centered way of responding to common issues.

Overview: Understanding Your Child Ages Three to Six

Raising a child between three and six years old is filled with wonderful moments and unique hurdles. In Touchpoints-Three to Six, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton offers a compassionate and authoritative roadmap for this critical stage of development. Drawing on decades of clinical experience, Brazelton helps Canadian parents anticipate and understand the predictable yet often perplexing behaviours that emerge during these years. From preschool adjustments to sibling dynamics, this book explores the emotional and cognitive milestones that shape your child's growth. The touchpoints framework emphasizes that development is not a smooth curve but a series of bursts and regressions, and knowing what to expect can make all the difference.
