Too Perfect: When Being in Control Gets Out of Control

Too Perfect: When Being in Control Gets Out of Control

Who Can Benefit from Reading Too Perfect?

This book speaks directly to individuals who see themselves in the description of perfectionism or compulsive control, offering validation and practical insights. Loved ones—partners, parents, or friends—of someone grappling with these traits will gain a deeper understanding of how to support without enabling. Mental health professionals will appreciate the clinical perspective woven throughout, which can complement therapy. While not a substitute for professional treatment, Too Perfect serves as an excellent companion for anyone exploring their relationship with control.

Key Themes Explored in the Book

The book delves into several interconnected themes, including:

  • The Need for Control: How a deep-seated desire for predictability and order can backfire, leading to anxiety and interpersonal friction.
  • Perfectionism vs. Healthy Striving: The difference between setting high standards and being enslaved by them.
  • Self-Worth and Identity: Many perfectionists tie their value to their achievements, making failure feel catastrophic.
  • Relationships and Intimacy: How control patterns can strain partnerships, friendships, and family dynamics.
  • Flexibility and Acceptance: Strategies for loosening the grip of perfectionism and embracing imperfection without losing ambition.

Each chapter uses real-life examples and clear explanations to make psychological concepts accessible. The tone is empathetic yet straightforward, avoiding jargon while maintaining depth.

What Makes Too Perfect a Unique Resource?

Unlike many self-help books that rely on generic advice or relaxation techniques, Too Perfect focuses on the specific psychological patterns behind compulsive behaviour. The authors draw on their clinical experience to explain why some people become trapped in cycles of control, rigidity, and perfectionism. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, they provide a framework for understanding root causes—whether tied to Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) or simply maladaptive habits. Readers appreciate the balanced approach that neither pathologizes nor trivializes the struggle.

Insights from Readers

Many readers of Too Perfect report that it opened their eyes to patterns they had not previously recognized, leading to greater compassion and clearer communication. A common sentiment is that the book is both eye-opening and practical—it does not just describe the problem but also offers ways to think differently. The respectful, nonjudgmental tone makes the content easier to absorb, even when the subject matter hits close to home. Readers often mention feeling less alone in their struggles after finishing the book.

Understanding Perfectionism and Control

Perfectionism is frequently considered a positive trait—a drive for excellence. However, when the need for control becomes all-consuming, it can disrupt relationships, work, and personal well-being. Too Perfect: When Being in Control Gets Out of Control explores this fine line, offering a compassionate and clear-eyed look at how perfectionism and compulsive control can become a trap. Written by Allan Mallinger and Jeannette Dewyze, this book is a valuable resource for anyone who has ever felt that their high standards are more of a burden than a blessing.

Moving Forward with Greater Self-Awareness

Too Perfect is more than a book about a problem; it is a guide to self-discovery. By understanding the roots of compulsive control, readers can begin to make small but meaningful changes. The emphasis is on gradual, sustainable growth rather than overnight transformation. Whether you are a perfectionist yourself or care about someone who is, this book provides a roadmap toward a more balanced, fulfilling life—one where control is a tool, not a master.
