Overview

Thinking Differently offers a transformative perspective for parents journeying through the complexities of raising children with learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD. Authored by David Flink, this handbook blends personal experience with practical, step-by-step strategies to nurture self-advocacy and resilience. It speaks directly to the 20 per cent of children who learn differently, providing a clear path to success both at school and in life. Drawing on educational psychology principles, the book helps parents understand how to tailor support to their child's unique learning profile.

About the Author

David Flink, co-founder and chief empowerment officer of Eye to Eye, a national non-profit that pairs young people with learning differences with mentors who share similar experiences. His expertise comes from both personal experience with dyslexia and ADHD and years of advocacy. Flink's work has been recognised by numerous organisations, and he speaks across the country on the power of neurodiversity.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is a must-read for parents of children with diagnosed or suspected learning disabilities, but it's equally valuable for educators, tutors, and anyone supporting a child's growth. Adults who have learning differences themselves will discover validation and practical resources. The clear, conversational writing style ensures a quick read for busy parents, without compromising depth.

Key Strategies for Self-Advocacy

At the heart of the book are actionable techniques that parents can put into practice right away. Flink stresses the significance of self-advocacy, guiding children to comprehend their own learning profiles and articulate their needs effectively. Strategies encompass building a support network, leveraging assistive technologies, and reframing obstacles as opportunities. This practical approach gives parents the confidence to advocate for their children in school environments. By focusing on strengths rather than deficits, the book aligns with modern educational psychology that emphasises individualised learning.

What Makes This Book Unique?

What sets this book apart from typical educational psychology resources is its grounding in real-life experience. David Flink, the founder of the mentoring organisation Eye to Eye, recounts his own journey with learning disabilities, interspersed with stories from his professional work. His captivating storytelling and wit render intricate subjects accessible and unforgettable. Rather than merely describing learning differences, the book celebrates them, turning the spotlight from deficiency to strength.

Practical Applications in Everyday Life

Moving beyond theory, Thinking Differently provides concrete actions for parents to apply both at home and in school. Topics range from discussing accommodations with teachers to fostering a child's confidence through strengths-based exercises. The book connects research to everyday situations, encouraging parents to view learning disabilities not as obstacles but as alternative ways of thinking that can spark creativity and achievement. Each chapter includes reflective questions and practical checklists to support implementation.

Why Self-Advocacy Matters in Educational Psychology

Self-advocacy is a cornerstone of success for students with learning differences. When children understand their strengths and challenges, they can communicate effectively with teachers and peers. This book empowers parents to instil these skills early, setting the stage for lifelong independence. Educational psychology research shows that self-advocacy improves academic outcomes and self-esteem. Thinking Differently translates these findings into everyday actions that families can use immediately.

Building a Support Network

Flink emphasises the importance of connecting with other parents, educators, and professionals. He provides guidance on finding mentors, joining support groups, and navigating school systems. The book also highlights the role of technology in levelling the playing field, from text-to-speech software to organisational apps. By building a strong support network, parents can ensure their children have the resources they need to thrive.
