About the Author

David Flink is a leading advocate for individuals with learning differences, drawing from his own experiences with dyslexia and ADHD. As the founder and CEO of Eye to Eye, a national mentoring organization that pairs college students with learning differences with younger mentees, he brings firsthand insight into what works. His personal journey, woven throughout the book, adds authenticity and inspiration. Readers appreciate his ability to simplify complex issues and his gift for storytelling, making the book both engaging and educational.

Who Should Read This Book

This book is primarily written for parents of children with learning disabilities, but its insights are valuable for educators, counsellors, and anyone who works with neurodivergent youth. Even adults with undiagnosed learning differences may find the self-advocacy techniques empowering. The author’s conversational tone and relatable stories make it accessible without requiring a background in special education. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis or you are just beginning to notice signs of learning differences, this guide provides a compassionate and practical starting point.

Overview

When raising a child with learning disabilities like dyslexia or ADHD, it can be easy to feel lost. Thinking Differently by David Flink offers a fresh perspective. This book goes beyond diagnosis to provide actionable, hands-on strategies that help children advocate for themselves and thrive. Focusing on the 20% of students who learn differently, Flink draws from his own experience and his work with Eye to Eye, a national mentoring programme. The result is a guide that blends personal anecdotes with proven techniques to foster self-confidence and academic success.

Key Strategies and Insights

Thinking Differently is filled with innovative strategies that parents can implement immediately. These include using mentorship as a tool for motivation, identifying and nurturing strengths rather than focusing solely on weaknesses, and teaching children to break tasks into manageable steps. Flink also addresses common challenges like homework battles, social struggles, and executive function difficulties. Each chapter ends with concrete takeaways, making it easy to apply the lessons to your child’s unique situation. The emphasis on the “20%”—the proportion of students with learning differences—underscores that these children are not alone and have a community of peers and advocates.

How Can Thinking Differently Empower Your Child?

The core message is that learning disabilities are not deficits—they are different ways of thinking that can be leveraged for success. Flink emphasizes self-advocacy, teaching children to understand their own learning profiles and communicate their needs effectively. Through relatable stories and clear explanations, parents learn to shift from a problem-focused mindset to one that celebrates neurodiversity. This approach helps children build resilience, develop metacognitive skills, and take ownership of their education. The book also covers practical strategies for working with schools, creating supportive home environments, and fostering a growth mindset.

Practical Applications for Everyday Life

Beyond theory, Thinking Differently offers concrete tools for daily use. Parents learn how to communicate with teachers to se accommodations, how to create homework routines that reduce stress, and how to help their child build a personal support network. The book includes templates for self-advocacy scripts and goal-setting exercises. Many readers find the advice transformative, helping them shift from frustration to empowerment. By focusing on strengths rather than deficits, this book equips families to embrace neurodiversity and unlock their child’s full potential.
