About the Author

David Flink, co-founder and CEO of the mentoring organization Eye to Eye, brings a unique perspective to this book. He has dyslexia and ADHD himself, and his lived experience shines through in every chapter. Flink’s storytelling approach makes the material relatable and engaging, and his years of work in schools and communities ground his insights in real-world practice. He is a recognized leader in the field of learning disabilities, and his passion for empowering neurodivergent youth is evident throughout.

Overview

Thinking Differently is an empowering resource for parents navigating the challenges of raising a child with learning disabilities. Written by David Flink, this book combines personal stories with practical, hands-on strategies to help children with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning differences become self-advocates. The book focuses on the 20% of students who learn differently, offering innovative approaches that celebrate neurodiversity rather than pathologize it. Flink’s message is clear: thinking differently is a strength, not a deficit, and with the right support, every child can thrive.

Who Should Read This Book?

This guide is primarily for parents of children diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning disabilities, but it is also valuable for educators, therapists, and anyone who works with neurodivergent youth. Flink’s accessible writing style makes complex concepts easy to understand, and his firsthand experience as someone with learning differences adds authenticity. The book serves as both a practical manual and an inspiring call to action, urging readers to shift from focusing on deficits to celebrating unique strengths.

Key Concepts: Redefining Learning Disabilities

The book challenges traditional views of learning disabilities, reframing them as variations in how the brain processes information. Flink introduces the concept of self-advocacy as a critical skill—teaching children to understand their own learning needs and communicate them effectively. He argues that when children learn to embrace their differences, they gain confidence and resilience. The book also explores the social and emotional aspects of growing up with learning differences, including strategies for building strong relationships and overcoming stigma.

Practical Applications: Strategies for Self-Advocacy

The heart of the book lies in its actionable advice. Flink provides step-by-step guidance on how to help children identify their learning styles, communicate with teachers, and request accommodations in school. He also includes tips for parents on how to navigate the special education system, build a support network, and foster a growth mindset at home. Each chapter ends with reflection questions and activities that encourage parents to apply the concepts to their own situations. Readers have noted that the book’s blend of personal anecdotes and concrete strategies makes it a uniquely useful tool for families.

How Does Thinking Differently Empower Children?

By focusing on self-advocacy, the book equips children with the tools they need to succeed not only in school but in life. Flink emphasizes that learning disabilities do not define a person; rather, they are just one aspect of a multifaceted identity. The book’s positive, strengths-based approach helps children build confidence and develop a sense of agency. Whether through role-playing conversations with teachers or creating a personal learning profile, the strategies in this book are designed to be practical and immediately applicable.
