What Is The Unexpected?

The Unexpected: Navigating Pregnancy During and After Complications is the latest addition to the ParentData Series by Emily Oster, author of Cribsheet and Expecting Better, and Dr. Nathan Fox, a practising maternal-fetal medicine specialist. This book offers a unique blend of economic data analysis and clinical expertise to help parents navigate high-risk pregnancies and postpartum recovery. The series is known for its evidence-based approach, aiming to empower parents with clear, data-driven insights. This volume continues that tradition by focusing on the challenges of complicated pregnancies.

Is This Book Right for You?

If you are currently navigating a complicated pregnancy or simply want to prepare for potential challenges, The Unexpected belongs on your shelf. It is also an excellent resource for partners, family members, and health care professionals who support pregnant people. The book uses accessible language to demystify complex medical data, making it understandable for everyone—no medical background required. Whether you are a first-time parent or have previous experience, the information provided can help you have more informed conversations with your health care team. The tone is calm and non-alarmist, focusing on facts rather than fear.

This book is for educational purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult your health care provider for personal medical guidance.

What Pregnancy Complications Does This Book Cover?

The Unexpected addresses a range of common pregnancy complications, providing evidence-based information to help parents understand their options. While the book cannot cover every possible scenario, it aims to give readers a solid foundation for understanding risks, interventions, and outcomes. Topics such as diabetes, preeclampsia, foetal growth restriction, and preterm birth are explored with the goal of demystifying medical terminology and providing practical guidance. The book emphasises shared decision-making and encourages readers to ask the right questions of their health care providers. Each chapter breaks down the data in a way that is both thorough and accessible.

How Does This Book Support New Parents?

The Unexpected stands out by combining two perspectives: Oster’s data-driven approach to risk assessment and Fox’s frontline medical practice. This dual authorship means you get both the numbers and the bedside manner. Readers appreciate the calm, non-alarmist tone that empowers rather than frightens. The book emphasises that knowledge is power—especially when facing unexpected twists in pregnancy. It also provides tools for communicating effectively with doctors and midwives, helping parents feel more in control. The postpartum period is not neglected; the book includes insights on recovery and mental health, which are crucial for new parents.

About the Authors

Emily Oster is an economist and professor at Brown University, known for her data-driven parenting books including Expecting Better and Cribsheet. Her work has helped millions of parents make informed decisions by cutting through conflicting advice. Dr. Nathan Fox is a practising maternal-fetal medicine specialist with extensive experience managing high-risk pregnancies. Together, they bring a rare combination of academic rigour and clinical wisdom to this book. Their collaboration ensures that the content is both scientifically sound and practically relevant.

Why This Book Matters

Pregnancy complications can be daunting, and misinformation can add to the stress. The Unexpected fills a gap by offering reliable, well-researched information in a format that is easy to digest. It is not just a reference guide; it is a companion for parents who want to take an active role in their care. By focusing on the most common complications and emphasising data transparency, this book helps level the playing field between patients and providers. It is a valuable addition to the ParentData Series and a must-read for anyone facing a complicated pregnancy or supporting someone who is.

The Unexpected: Navigating Pregnancy During and After Complications is a timely and essential resource. Whether you are dealing with a specific diagnosis or simply want to be prepared, this book equips you with the tools to navigate the journey with confidence and calm. The dual perspective of economist and clinician offers a balanced view that is rare in pregnancy literature. We highly recommend it for any parent-to-be, as well as for healthcare professionals seeking to better support their patients.
