The Erik Erikson Reader

The Erik Erikson Reader

$62.97

Overview

For those seeking a profound understanding of human development across the lifespan, The Erik Erikson Reader offers an unparalleled collection of writings from one of the most influential psychologists of the twentieth century. Spanning over five decades of work, this volume presents Erikson's groundbreaking theories on psychosocial development, identity formation, and the human life cycle. Edited by Robert Coles, M.D., the reader assembles key essays and excerpts from across Erikson's career, including material from Childhood and Society, Identity and the Life Cycle, and Gandhi's Truth. This edition is designed to provide Canadian readers with a cohesive look at how Erikson's ideas evolved from his early studies of childhood to his later reflections on old age.

About the Author and Editor

Erik Erikson (1902–1994) was a German-American psychoanalyst renowned for his theory of psychosocial development. After training under Anna Freud, he taught at Harvard, Yale, and the University of California, Berkeley. His work left an indelible mark on developmental psychology and our understanding of identity. Robert Coles, M.D., a noted psychiatrist and author, studied under Erikson and brings his own expertise in child development and social ethics to the editorial selection, ensuring the reader highlights Erikson's most enduring contributions.

Key Concepts Covered

The book delves into Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial development, ranging from trust versus mistrust in infancy to integrity versus despair in old age. It explores the concept of the identity crisis—a term Erikson popularized—and examines how social and cultural forces shape personality throughout life. Also included are his reflections on the interplay between psychology and history, as seen in his psychobiographies of Martin Luther and Mahatma Gandhi. The reader covers topics such as ego identity, the role of ritualization, and the significance of adolescence as a critical period.

Who Should Read This?

This collection is ideal for students of psychology, sociology, and education seeking primary sources on developmental theory. It also serves mental health professionals, researchers, and anyone curious about how we grow and change over a lifetime. General readers with an interest in human development will find Erikson's prose both accessible and thought-provoking.

What Makes This Psychology Reader Essential?

This reader stands out for its comprehensive selection of Erikson's key essays and book excerpts. Rather than focusing on a single work, it curates pieces from his entire career, including less accessible writings that are particularly valuable for those wanting a deeper grasp of his contributions. The inclusion of material from his psychobiographies and clinical practice provides a well-rounded view of his methodology. Additionally, the thematic organization by Coles allows readers to trace key ideas across decades with ease.

Final Verdict

The Erik Erikson Reader is a masterful compilation that offers both breadth and depth. It is an indispensable text for anyone seeking to understand the full arc of Erikson's thought. Highly recommended for libraries, classrooms, and personal study.

This book is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional psychological advice.
