The Dose Makes the Poison: A Plain-Language Guide to Toxicology

The Dose Makes the Poison: A Plain-Language Guide to Toxicology

$79.21

What Is the “Dose Makes the Poison” Principle?

The fundamental idea that the dose determines whether a substance is harmful or harmless is the cornerstone of toxicology, and this book explores it in depth. The authors explain that even essential nutrients can become toxic in excess, while many feared chemicals pose no risk at typical exposure levels. Using clear examples and analogies, they help readers understand that context – amount, frequency, route of exposure – matters far more than the mere presence of a chemical. This principle is the foundation for risk assessment and public health decisions in Canada and beyond.

Overview

In a world where headlines about chemicals in food and the environment cause alarm, The Dose Makes the Poison: A Plain-Language Guide to Toxicology offers a rational, science-based perspective. Written by Patricia Frank and M. Alice Ottoboni, this book demystifies toxicology for the general reader. It explains that nearly any substance can be harmful at the right dose – and that toxicity depends on exposure, not just the chemical itself. This guide is essential for anyone who wants to make informed decisions about the risks and benefits of chemicals in daily life, from food additives to household products.

Key Topics Covered

  • Basic Chemistry Principles: A gentle to the chemistry needed to understand toxicology, making it accessible to readers without a science background.
  • Natural vs. Synthetic Chemicals: An examination of why “natural” is not synonymous with safe and “synthetic” with dangerous, with numerous examples from everyday life.
  • How the Body Processes Toxins: Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion – the four-step journey that determines a chemical’s effect.
  • Risk Assessment and Regulation: How scientists and regulators, including Health Canada, determine safe levels, set exposure limits, and communicate risk to the public.
  • Common Chemical Controversies: Balanced discussions on food additives, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and environmental pollutants, cutting through hype with evidence.

What Readers Will Learn

  • The difference between hazard and risk, and why that distinction matters.
  • How to evaluate scary-sounding headlines with a critical eye.
  • Why the human body is remarkably adept at handling low-level chemical exposures.
  • Practical ways to reduce unnecessary exposures without irrational fear.
  • The historical origins of toxicology, from Paracelsus to modern regulatory science.

Why Choose This Book?

Unlike sensationalized accounts, The Dose Makes the Poison takes a neutral, evidence-based approach. It respects the reader’s intelligence while assuming no prior scientific knowledge. Whether you are a health professional, a student, or simply an informed citizen, this book equips you with the foundational knowledge to separate fear from fact. Build your understanding of toxicology – and make better decisions about the chemicals in your world.
