The Cry for Myth

Why Read This Book?

For anyone questioning the role of storytelling in today's world, The Cry for Myth offers a compassionate and erudite exploration. Rollo May, a celebrated psychologist, argues that myths are not outdated tales but vital frameworks that help us navigate life's deepest challenges. Whether you are a student of folklore, a therapist, or simply a curious reader, this book illuminates how ancient narratives—from Oedipus to Hansel and Gretel—continue to shape our identities and heal our psyches. It invites you to discover the myths that speak to your own life, making it an essential addition to any personal library.

Critical Reception and Influence

Since its publication, May's work has been hailed as a significant contribution to both psychology and mythology. Scholars appreciate his ability to bridge academic disciplines with accessible prose, while therapists and educators find it invaluable for understanding clients' and students' search for meaning. Readers consistently note how the book reveals the relevance of ancient tales in contemporary life, earning it a frequent spot on course syllabi for fairy tale criticism and depth psychology. Some critics argue that May's concept of myth is too broad, but the book's influence endures; it remains in print and continues to spark discussion in forums on existential psychology and folklore.

Thematic Analysis: Myth, Meaning, and Modernity

Central to May's argument is the idea that myths provide essential structure for moral development and identity formation. He explains how traditional folktales convey ethical lessons through symbolic language, allowing individuals to internalize values without didacticism. In our secular age, he warns, the loss of shared myths has created a vacuum filled by consumerism and technology. Yet he remains hopeful, suggesting that new myths can emerge from literature, film, and personal creativity. The book devotes substantial attention to the hero's journey, building on Joseph Campbell's work but grounding it in clinical reality. May shows how people in therapy often unconsciously re-enact mythic patterns—the quest, the ordeal, the return—and by recognizing these patterns, can reframe their struggles as meaningful narratives rather than random suffering. Another key theme is the relationship between myth and neurosis: May proposes that many psychological disorders stem from the suppression of mythic imagination. When a person cannot access symbolic meaning, life becomes literal and impoverished. He cites examples from fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel to illustrate psychological dangers and coping strategies, offering nuanced analysis that avoids simplistic allegory while highlighting the wisdom embedded in folk narratives.

What Makes This Work on Mythology Unique?

Unlike academic studies that treat myths as historical artefacts, The Cry for Myth approaches them as living psychological forces. May does not simply catalogue folklore motifs; he examines how specific myths—such as Oedipus, Narcissus, and Faust—continue to shape our unconscious lives. His clinical vignettes show patients struggling with depression and meaninglessness who find solace and self-understanding through mythic narratives. This integration of psychotherapy and mythology sets the book apart, making it valuable for both scholars and general readers interested in fairy tale criticism and depth psychology.

Overview: Why Myth Still Matters

In The Cry for Myth, Rollo May argues that myths are not mere relics of the past but essential narratives that give structure and meaning to human existence. Drawing on classical mythology, literature, and clinical case studies, he demonstrates how modern society's loss of mythic frameworks contributes to widespread feelings of emptiness and anxiety. The book is both a scholarly examination of folklore and a passionate plea for the recovery of storytelling as a source of psychological and cultural health. May contends that myths function as collective dreams, expressing universal human conflicts and aspirations. Without them, individuals lack symbolic resources to navigate life's crises. The work weaves together insights from Freud, Jung, and existential philosophy, making a compelling case for why fairy tales, legends, and religious narratives remain profoundly relevant today.
