Overview

This book offers a thorough exploration of facilitation through equine assisted activities. It is designed for professionals in counselling, psychology, and equine services who seek to integrate experiential learning with horses into their practice. The activities presented are structured to foster personal growth, enhance team dynamics, and support therapeutic objectives. Whether you are new to equine assisted learning or an experienced facilitator, this resource provides practical tools to refine your approach and deepen your impact.

Who This Book Is For

This resource is intended for a broad range of practitioners across Canada, including equine specialists, therapeutic riding instructors, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, and mental health professionals. It is also valuable for educators and trainers involved in personal development and team building. The activities are adaptable to various contexts, from individual sessions to large group workshops, making it a versatile addition to your professional toolkit. By bridging theory and practice, this book helps you create meaningful learning experiences for diverse populations.

Key Themes and Concepts

At its core, this book emphasises a participant-centred approach to facilitation. It distinguishes between directing and guiding, encouraging a facilitator style that fosters self-discovery and problem-solving. The book covers foundational facilitation concepts, including how to structure sessions, manage group dynamics, ask effective questions, and facilitate debriefing discussions. Each of the 28 activities is grounded in adult learning principles and is presented with clear goals, step-by-step instructions, and debriefing prompts. The activities range from groundwork exercises to mounted activities, addressing themes such as trust, communication, leadership, boundary setting, and emotional regulation.

Practical Applications

This guide is designed for immediate use. The exercises are ready to implement, with detailed descriptions of the facilitator's role and expected participant outcomes. The book also offers guidance on tailoring activities to specific populations, including those with mental health challenges, trauma histories, or developmental disabilities. It addresses common challenges facilitators face, such as managing unexpected behaviours, adapting to different learning styles, and ensuring safety. By focusing on the facilitator's growth, the book helps you become more responsive and effective in your work.

How This Book Supports Professional Development

Beyond providing activities, this book delves into the art of facilitation itself. It encourages you to reflect on your own style and to develop a flexible approach that can be adapted to various settings. You will learn techniques for creating a safe and inclusive environment, for encouraging participation, and for guiding groups through experiential learning processes. The book also includes tips for integrating equine assisted activities into existing programmes, whether in therapeutic riding centres, counselling offices, or outdoor settings. By combining theory with practice, this book serves as a comprehensive resource for both new and experienced facilitators.
