Core Concepts in Building a Care Team

At the heart of Share The Care is the principle that many hands make light work. The book provides a step-by-step system for recruiting volunteers, assigning roles, and co-ordinating tasks — from medical visits to meal prep and emotional support. Emphasis is placed on clear communication, regular team meetings, and leveraging technology to keep everyone on the same page. This distribution of responsibilities helps prevent caregiver burnout while ensuring the patient receives consistent, compassionate care. The revised edition includes updates on digital tools and modern communication strategies relevant to today's caregivers.

How to Use This Book

There are multiple ways to use Share The Care. Some readers will go through the entire book before forming a care team, while others will dip into specific chapters when needed. The book includes worksheets and sample meeting agendas that can be customized to your situation. It also provides advice on navigating tough conversations — for instance, talking about the illness with the patient or asking others to lend a hand. For optimal results, the authors suggest starting with a small committed group and following the outlined steps, adapting them as needed for personal preferences and cultural considerations.

Understanding Share The Care

Share The Care is a practical guide that shows how to build a team of family and friends to support someone with a serious illness. Instead of placing all the responsibility on one person, this book champions a group model that distributes the load and delivers well-rounded care. The revised and updated edition speaks to today's caregiving challenges and provides actionable advice for creating a sustainable network. Whether you're starting a caregiving plan from scratch or refining an existing one, this resource offers valuable insights into shared responsibility and compassionate connection.

What Makes This Approach Distinctive

What sets Share The Care apart from generic caregiving advice is its laser focus on team-based support rather than solo care. The concept grew out of the authors' own experiences and has been honed over many years. Cappy Capossela and Sheila Warnock drew on their personal caregiving journeys to design a system that honours the patient's dignity while safeguarding the well-being of caregivers. The revised edition, informed by feedback from hundreds of care teams, is a practical and tested resource. This book is particularly valuable for long-term illnesses like cancer, ALS, or Alzheimer's, where consistent support is essential.

How This Book Might Support Caregivers

Caring for a seriously ill person can be overwhelming. Share The Care provides a structured framework that empowers you to ask for help and build a dependable support system. The book offers templates, checklists, and real-life stories that show how care teams work effectively. It tackles common hurdles like making medical decisions, handling finances, and setting boundaries. For anyone feeling isolated in their caregiving role, this book presents a collaborative approach that has helped countless families and friends across Canada.
