Overview

For parents, educators, and therapists in Canada seeking to understand the emotional world of children, John Bowlby's classic work remains an indispensable resource. Separation: Anxiety and Anger is the second volume in his groundbreaking trilogy on attachment, examining what happens when children are separated from their primary caregivers. Bowlby's meticulous observations and theoretical insights provide a framework for understanding the intense emotions—anxiety and anger—that arise during separations. This volume is essential reading for anyone wishing to comprehend the deep bonds between children and their parents, and the psychological impact of disruptions to those bonds.

Originally published as part of the Basic Books Classics series, this edition presents Bowlby's original text with a foreword by Stephen A. Mitchell. It remains a cornerstone of attachment theory, influencing fields from developmental psychology to parenting practices. Whether you are a parent, educator, therapist, or student, this book offers a foundational understanding of how early experiences shape emotional development.

What You'll Learn

This book explores the complex emotional responses children have when separated from attachment figures. Readers can expect to gain a deeper understanding of:

  • The nature and function of attachment behaviours in early childhood.
  • How separation triggers anxiety and anger, and why these emotions are adaptive.
  • The phases of protest, despair, and detachment that children may experience during prolonged separations.
  • The role of the caregiver in providing a se base for exploration.
  • How early attachment experiences influence later relationships and emotional regulation.
  • The theoretical underpinnings of attachment theory, including its roots in ethology and psychoanalysis.

Bowlby's work helps explain why children may react strongly to even temporary separations, and offers a lens through which to view these reactions not as misbehaviour but as natural responses rooted in evolutionary biology.
