About the Author

John Bowlby, the British psychologist and psychiatrist who pioneered attachment theory, is the author of this seminal work. His integration of ethology, cybernetics, and developmental psychology created a scientifically grounded framework that continues to influence child psychology today. In this second volume of his trilogy, Bowlby focuses on the immediate reactions to separation from attachment figures.

Overview

Few works have shaped our understanding of early childhood emotional development as profoundly as John Bowlby's Separation: Anxiety and Anger. This classic text offers a detailed examination of how children respond to separation from their primary caregivers, exploring the intense emotions of anxiety and anger that arise. Bowlby's meticulous case studies and theoretical insights provide a framework for recognizing the critical role of se attachments. For parents, educators, and professionals, this book remains an indispensable resource for comprehending the deep distress caused by separation and the adaptive function of anger in seeking reunion.

What Makes This Volume Essential?

As the second installment of Bowlby's trilogy, this volume focuses specifically on the immediate reactions to loss of attachment figures. Unlike other works that treat separation as a single event, Bowlby traces the temporal sequence of protest, despair, and detachment. The book is noted for its comprehensive examination of how young children express anxiety and anger when separated from their mothers. Readers consistently praise its depth and detail, finding it an invaluable resource for both academic study and clinical practice. The foreword by Stephen A. Mitchell adds contemporary context, connecting Bowlby's ideas to modern relational psychoanalysis.

Key Topics Covered

  • The nature and function of separation anxiety in infancy and early childhood
  • How anger serves as a response to threatened attachment bonds
  • The stages of grief: protest, despair, and detachment
  • Factors influencing individual differences in separation responses
  • Implications for parenting and childcare practices
  • Connections between early attachment and later emotional health
  • Critiques and expansions of Bowlby's original formulations

Who Should Read This Book?

This volume is ideal for mental health professionals, including psychologists, social workers, and therapists working with children and families. It is also highly relevant for parents and educators who wish to understand the emotional lives of young children from a scholarly perspective. Graduate students in developmental psychology, attachment theory, or child psychiatry will find it an essential reference. The book's clear narrative style makes it accessible to thoughtful lay readers interested in the foundations of human bonding.

What Readers Say

Readers consistently highlight the book's thoroughness and insight, describing it as an amazing resource. Many note that it clarifies complex emotional dynamics in a compelling way. While some have commented on edition issues, the content itself receives high praise for its enduring relevance and scholarly depth.

A Note on the Series

Separation: Anxiety and Anger is Volume 2 of the Attachment and Loss trilogy. For a comprehensive understanding, readers may also wish to explore Attachment (Volume 1) and Loss: Sadness and Depression (Volume 3). Together, these works form a cohesive theory of early social development and its lifelong influence. This classic edition from Basic Books continues to serve as a standard text in child psychology.
