Tracing the Roots: African Birthing Traditions

This book begins by exploring the rich tapestry of birthing customs in various African societies, highlighting the expertise of traditional midwives—known as traditional birth attendants—who passed down skills through oral tradition and hands-on apprenticeship. These practices were deeply intertwined with spiritual beliefs, community support, and herbal knowledge, offering a holistic approach that sustained maternal and infant health long before modern obstetrics.

Preserving Oral Histories and Cultural Knowledge

One of the book's strengths is its reliance on oral histories and interviews with midwives and their descendants. By centring these voices, the author ensures that the knowledge and experiences of Black midwives are recorded and honoured. This approach not only enriches the historical record but also challenges dominant narratives about childbirth, race, and medicine in the United States. It is a testament to the power of community-based knowledge and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Who Will Benefit from This Book?

This work is essential for students and scholars of African American studies, women's history, and medical anthropology. It also speaks to midwives, doulas, and birth workers seeking historical context for their practice. General readers with an interest in cultural heritage, oral history, or the social dimensions of healthcare will find it equally compelling. The book bridges academic research and accessible storytelling, making it suitable for both classroom and personal exploration.

The Journey to the American South

With the forced migration of enslaved Africans, these birthing traditions travelled across the Atlantic and adapted to new environments. In the American South, African American midwives became cornerstones of their communities, often serving as the primary caregivers for childbirth. The book documents how they preserved ancestral techniques while navigating the brutal realities of slavery and segregation, maintaining a thread of cultural continuity under immense pressure.

What Makes Safe in a Midwife's Hands a Vital Read?

This book offers a unique lens into the history of childbirth and the vital role of midwives across the African diaspora. By tracing practices from West Africa to the American South, it uncovers a legacy of knowledge, resilience, and cultural preservation that has long been overlooked. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of how birthing traditions shaped communities and empowered women through generations.

Safe in a Midwife's Hands is a nuanced, well-researched account that sheds light on an often-invisible history. It invites readers to rethink the past and appreciate the enduring wisdom of those who brought new life into the world against all odds.
