Why Study Biomedical Ethics?

Biomedical ethics tackles the moral questions that arise in clinical practice, medical research, and health policy. As medicine progresses, new ethical challenges continue to emerge – from patient autonomy and informed consent to resource allocation and end-of-life care. A solid understanding of ethical principles helps health care professionals navigate these complex issues with integrity and compassion. This textbook provides a structured framework for analysing ethical problems, covering fundamental concepts that form the basis of modern bioethics, including respect for persons, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. By studying these principles, readers develop the skills to recognise ethical dilemmas, evaluate competing obligations, and justify their decisions.

For Canadian health care providers and students, grounding in biomedical ethics is essential given the country’s diverse population and publicly funded system. The principles discussed in this book apply directly to the ethical challenges encountered in Canadian hospitals, clinics, and research institutions.

  • Confidentiality and privacy
  • Ethical issues at the beginning and end of life
