About the Authors

Paul Watzlawick, a renowned psychotherapist and leading figure at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, joins forces with communication scholar Janet Helmick Beavin and psychiatrist Don D. Jackson, a pioneer in family therapy. Together, they offer a multidisciplinary perspective that enriches the book's content, combining expertise in psychiatry, communication theory, and clinical practice to create an authoritative and enduring text.

Overview

Few texts have shaped the study of human interaction as profoundly as this classic from the Palo Alto Group. Written by Watzlawick, Beavin, and Jackson, Pragmatics of Human Communication explores intricate patterns of human interaction, pathological communication, and the paradoxes that arise. It provides a foundational understanding of the pragmatics of interpersonal relationships, with insights that remain highly relevant today. Whether you are a mental health professional, a student of psychiatry, or a researcher, this book offers a deep dive into the dynamics of communication that shape our lives.

  • Analysis of communication pathologies, including the famous double bind theory
  • Discussion of paradoxes in interpersonal relationships
