What Makes This Book Stand Out?

Unlike many parenting books that promise quick fixes, this one builds a foundation of mutual respect and long-term skills. The authors—all experienced educators and therapists—explain the psychology behind preschooler behaviour and offer tools that strengthen your connection while teaching essential life skills. The revised 4th edition includes the latest research on brain development, positive discipline techniques, and common parenting pitfalls. It's not about controlling your child; it's about guiding them with kindness and firmness.

Overview

The preschool years are a remarkable window of growth – and a test of every parent's patience. In this fully revised 4th edition, the authors of Positive Discipline for Preschoolers offer time-tested strategies for guiding young children with kindness and firmness. Rooted in the work of Jane Nelsen, Ed.D., and her colleagues, this book provides practical, non-punitive strategies for navigating everyday struggles – from tantrums and mealtime battles to potty training and sibling rivalry.

Key Features of the Revised 4th Edition

  • Practical at every age: Specific guidance for children from ages 2 to 6, with clear examples for each stage.
  • Updated research: Incorporates recent findings in neuroscience and child development to explain why children behave the way they do.
  • Charts and checklists: Quick-reference tools for common challenges like bedtime, independence, and social skills.
  • Questions to ponder: Each chapter ends with reflective questions to help you apply the concepts to your own family.
  • Step-by-step problem solving: Learn the Positive Discipline model of identifying a behaviour's purpose and responding effectively.

What You'll Learn

  • How to understand the beliefs behind your child's behaviour – and respond to the need, not just the action.
  • Effective ways to set limits without power struggles or punishment.
  • Techniques for fostering independence, cooperation, and problem-solving skills.
  • How to handle common preschool challenges: biting, whining, interrupting, and more.
  • Strategies for building your child's self-esteem and resilience.
  • The importance of family meetings and how to start them with young children.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is essential for parents of children ages 2 to 6 who want to move beyond punishment and rewards to build a respectful, collaborative family life. It's also invaluable for early childhood educators, paediatricians, and family therapists who work with young children. Whether you're a first-time parent or have older children, the tools in this book will transform your daily interactions and help you raise confident, capable kids.

What Readers Are Saying

Readers consistently praise this book for its practical, real-world advice. Many parents note that the strategies help them stay calm and consistent, turning tantrums into teaching moments. The chapter-ending questions are especially appreciated for prompting thoughtful reflection. Parents of toddlers and preschoolers find the guidance immediately usable, and many have gifted the book to friends on their child's second birthday. One long-time fan shared that the book's principles helped her navigate the early years with minimal battles, and she continues to recommend it years later.
