What Makes This Book Special?

In a crowded field of parenting advice, the Positive Discipline approach stands out by offering a middle path that is neither permissive nor punitive. This book respects both parent and child, inviting you to become a student of your own little one. Its strength lies in adaptability—principles that work whether your toddler is strong-willed, sensitive, or somewhere in between. The fourth edition brings fresh relevance, addressing modern issues like parental burnout and the impact of digital devices on early relationships. It’s a guide that grows with your family.

About the Authors

Jane Nelsen, Ed.D., a licensed marriage and family therapist, created the Positive Discipline series and trains facilitators worldwide. Cheryl Erwin, M.A., a licensed therapist, coauthors several Positive Discipline books, specializing in family dynamics. Roslyn Ann Duffy is an author and parenting educator with decades of classroom and counselling experience. Together, they bring a wealth of clinical and practical knowledge to every page.

Key Features

This edition updates the classic Positive Discipline framework for today’s families. Key features include:

  • Authoritative Expertise: Jane Nelsen, Ed.D., Cheryl Erwin, M.A., and Roslyn Ann Duffy combine their experience as therapists and educators to offer reliable, nuanced guidance.
  • Age-Specific Focus: The book zeroes in on infancy through toddlerhood—the critical period for foundational brain development and attachment. Unlike general parenting books, it addresses unique needs of children under three.
  • Practical, Non-Punitive Tools: Alternatives to time-outs and spanking, such as “kind and firm” limit setting, encouraging curiosity, and fostering autonomy without power struggles.
  • Fourth Edition Updates: Includes latest research on early childhood development, sleep, feeding, and technology use. Also addresses modern challenges like balancing screen time and managing parental stress.
  • Real-Life Examples: Scenarios drawn from everyday situations help you apply principles immediately—whether dealing with a diaper change refusal or a meltdown at the grocery store.

What You’ll Learn

Positive Discipline: The First Three Years transforms your parenting mindset. Key takeaways:

  • Understanding Your Child’s World: Learn how a baby’s brain develops and why misbehaviour is often communication. Reduce unrealistic expectations by knowing what your child is capable of at each stage.
  • Building Connection: Attachment-friendly techniques like “special time” and consistent routines create security and strengthen your bond.
  • Encouraging Cooperation: Instead of demanding obedience, invite cooperation through choices, playful engagement, and respectful requests. This builds self-discipline from the inside out.
  • Setting Limits with Respect: Say “no” in a way that preserves dignity. Use the “Three R’s” of logical consequences: Related, Respectful, and Reasonable.
  • Emotional Regulation for Parents: Self-care strategies and tools for staying calm when your toddler pushes every button.
  • Long-Term Goals: Every interaction teaches life skills like responsibility, empathy, and problem-solving. Parent with the future in mind.

Who Should Read This Book?

New Parents: Navigate the joys and trials of your baby’s first years with a roadmap to raising a child who feels capable and valued. Experienced Parents: Find fresh insights, especially if stuck in repetitive power struggles. Childcare Professionals: Teachers, nannies, and early childhood educators benefit from respectful, effective discipline tools aligned with developmentally appropriate practice. Grandparents and Caregivers: Understand modern positive discipline and align with parents’ goals. Positive Discipline: The First Three Years is for anyone who cares for a young child and wants to build mutual respect and cooperation.
