About the Series

Part of the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology, this book integrates findings from neuroscience, psychology, and related disciplines to explore the interpersonal dimensions of mental health. The series aims to provide clinicians and researchers with cutting-edge knowledge that bridges theory and practice, authored by leading experts to advance understanding of how relationships and biology interact to shape human experience.

Key Concepts

The polyvagal theory proposes a hierarchical organisation of the autonomic nervous system, emphasising the vagus nerve's role in regulating states of calm and connection. It introduces neuroception, the subconscious detection of safety and danger, which influences behaviour and emotional regulation. The theory highlights the evolutionary development of neural pathways and their impact on social communication and attachment. These ideas form a foundation for understanding the biological basis of interpersonal interactions and emotional well-being. Neuroception is central to how individuals unconsciously evaluate risk and safety in their environment, affecting facial expressions and vocal tone.

Why This Book Matters

This text is essential for clinicians, researchers, and students seeking a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection. It bridges neuroscience with real-world applications in therapy, education, and personal development. By exploring the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying social behaviour, readers gain valuable perspectives on conditions such as trauma, anxiety, and autism. The polyvagal theory has influenced trauma-informed care and attachment theory, making this book a key resource in interpersonal neurobiology. Its insights into self-regulation are particularly relevant for those working with individuals who have experienced chronic stress or developmental challenges.

What to Expect

This collection of papers synthesizes decades of research, providing a rigorous scientific foundation for the polyvagal theory. Readers will encounter detailed discussions of the vagus nerve's anatomy and function, as well as the hierarchical responses of the nervous system. While the content is advanced and assumes familiarity with neurophysiology, it rewards persistence with a transformative understanding of how our bodies shape our emotions and connections. The book is best suited for those with a background in neuroscience, psychology, or related fields. It is not a light read but a comprehensive academic reference that has become a cornerstone in interpersonal neurobiology.

Overview

Within the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology, this volume introduces the polyvagal theory, a revolutionary lens through which to view the neurophysiological underpinnings of emotions, attachment, communication, and self-regulation. It offers a comprehensive exploration of the vagus nerve's role in shaping social behaviour and emotional experiences. The theory provides insights into how the nervous system mediates safety, threat, and social engagement, with implications for psychology, psychiatry, and neurology. This seminal work redefines our understanding of the nervous system's role in emotional and social life, offering a challenging but indispensable resource for professionals seeking an evidence-based grasp of how safety and connection are mediated biologically.
