Playful Approaches to Serious Problems: Narrative Therapy with Children and Their Families

Playful Approaches to Serious Problems: Narrative Therapy with Children and Their Families

$83.66

Key Themes Explored

  • Externalizing Conversations: Separating the person from the problem (e.g., “How does worry try to boss you around?”).
  • Re-authoring: Helping children and families create preferred stories about themselves.
  • Witnessing: Involving audiences (family, friends) to celebrate new developments.
  • Playfulness as a Clinical Tool: Using games, drawings, and humour to lower defences and spark change.
  • Non-pathologizing Approach: Moving away from labels like “ADHD” or “Oppositional” to focus on unique outcomes.

What Makes This Book Unique?

This book stands out by blending seriousness with play. Instead of focusing solely on deficits or diagnoses, it invites therapists to use humour, imagination, and creativity to address even the toughest challenges. The narrative approach is strengths-based: it respects children's abilities and honours their voices. Readers have noted how the case examples bring theory to life, making abstract concepts tangible. The book also offers concrete strategies for externalizing problems—turning “the problem” into a separate entity that child and therapist can tackle together.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is aimed at mental health professionals who work with children, adolescents, and families. It's also relevant for students in counselling, psychology, and social work programs. Parents and caregivers might appreciate the insights, though the primary audience is clinicians. The authors assume some familiarity with therapeutic concepts, but the writing remains accessible and engaging.

How Can Therapists Benefit?

Counsellors, social workers, psychologists, and family therapists will find practical tools they can apply immediately. The book is organized around real sessions, showing how to engage children who are reluctant, scared, or stuck. It emphasizes collaboration with parents and siblings, expanding the therapeutic circle. Reviewers highlight the non-blaming stance as particularly valuable: it reduces shame and opens up new possibilities. Whether you're new to narrative therapy or looking to deepen your practice, this book provides a solid framework and a wealth of ideas.

What Is This Book About?

Playful Approaches to Serious Problems: Narrative Therapy with Children and Their Families offers a refreshing, creative take on therapeutic work with young clients and their loved ones. Written by David Epston, Jennifer Freeman, and Dean Lobovits, this Norton Professional Book introduces narrative therapy as a way to separate children from the problems they face—without blame or pathologizing. Through engaging stories, practical examples, and playful techniques, the authors show how therapists can help children and families rewrite their own narratives, fostering resilience and connection.

About the Authors

David Epston, Jennifer Freeman, and Dean Lobovits are experienced therapists and co-directors of the Narrative Therapy Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. Together, they have trained practitioners worldwide and contributed significantly to the development of narrative practices. This book distils decades of clinical wisdom into a practical, inspiring resource.

Important Note: This book is intended for educational and professional development purposes. It does not replace individualized therapeutic advice or treatment. Always consult a qualified mental health professional for specific clinical concerns.
