Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviour: The RUBI Autism Network, Clinician Manual (Programs That Work)

Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviour: The RUBI Autism Network, Clinician Manual (Programs That Work)

$157.98

What Is the RUBI Parent Training Program?

Developed by the RUBI Autism Network, this clinician manual provides a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for parent training aimed at reducing disruptive behaviours in children with autism. The 12-session programme integrates applied behaviour analysis (ABA) principles with practical, family-centred strategies to address tantrums, aggression, and noncompliance. Designed by leading experts in autism and behavioural psychology, the manual offers a structured yet flexible approach that can be tailored to each family's unique needs.

Who Can Use This Manual?

This resource is intended for mental health professionals such as psychologists, behavioural therapists, social workers, and psychiatrists, as well as graduate trainees in clinical psychology or applied behaviour analysis. The manual assumes basic knowledge of autism and behavioural principles but provides sufficient detail for confident implementation. While the primary audience is clinicians, the parent handouts are written in accessible language and are available in English and Spanish, supporting home practice between sessions. This manual is suitable for use in outpatient clinics, hospitals, schools, and private practices.

Theoretical Foundations and Research Base

The RUBI programme is grounded in decades of research in applied behaviour analysis and parent-mediated interventions. The manual clearly outlines the theoretical rationale behind each component, including how functional analysis informs treatment decisions. Clinicians will gain insight into mechanisms of change, such as how antecedent modifications reduce disruptive behaviour and how reinforcement schedules promote skill acquisition. Evidence from the RUBI Autism Network trials demonstrated significant reductions in disruptive behaviour and improvements in parenting self-efficacy, providing a solid research foundation that gives clinicians confidence in the programme's efficacy.

What Does the Manual Include?

The manual spans over 250 pages and includes 12 session outlines with core concepts and activities, reproducible data collection forms and parent worksheets, guidance on conducting functional assessments, and strategies for addressing challenging parent interactions. Each session features a clear agenda, scripted talking points, and tips for handling common questions. The worksheets can be photocopied or printed from the accompanying digital files. The manual also provides templates for treatment planning and progress tracking, ensuring consistency across sessions and clinicians. Additionally, the appendices contain quick-reference materials, including a glossary of behavioural terms and a list of recommended readings.

Practical Applications in Clinical Settings

This manual is designed for flexibility in a variety of clinical settings. It can be implemented as a stand-alone intervention or integrated with other treatments such as speech therapy or occupational therapy. The session structure allows clinicians to adjust the pacing or focus on specific modules based on family needs. Strategies for managing common barriers—such as low parent engagement or resistance to change—are included, along with case examples that illustrate real-world application. Whether working in a hospital, clinic, or school, clinicians will find this manual a practical tool for delivering consistent, evidence-based parent training.

Why Choose This Clinician Manual?

Comprehensive and ready-to-use, this manual saves preparation time while ensuring fidelity to the treatment protocol. Each session is outlined in detail, with clear objectives, materials lists, and step-by-step implementation instructions. Clinicians can focus on therapeutic delivery rather than developing materials from scratch. The programme is grounded in research from the RUBI Autism Network, a multicentre collaboration that rigorously tested the intervention. Whether you are new to parent training or an experienced clinician, the manual offers a reliable, consistent approach that adapts to diverse clinical settings.

Key Features at a Glance

This manual offers several features that make it an essential resource for autism-focused clinicians. The manualized treatment protocol has been empirically validated in multiple clinical trials. The session-by-session structure allows for easy implementation in both individual and group settings. The parent handouts are written in accessible language and are available in English and Spanish. Additionally, the manual includes guidance on adapting the programme for children with varying levels of functioning and for diverse cultural backgrounds. Quick-reference materials in the appendices enhance its usability.

What Makes This Program Effective?

The RUBI programme targets the specific challenges families of children with autism face. Core components include functional behaviour assessment, antecedent management, reinforcement strategies, and parent coaching. Parents learn to identify triggers, set clear expectations, and respond calmly to disruptive behaviour. The programme emphasizes collaboration between clinician and parent, empowering families to implement strategies at home. The manual also incorporates techniques for managing co-occurring conditions like anxiety or sleep difficulties, making it a flexible tool for complex cases.
