Who Is This Guide For?

The Pacific Crest Trail Data Book is primarily intended for through-hikers taking on the entire trail, as well as section hikers mapping out multi-day trips. It is less suited for casual day hikers or those seeking detailed maps or scenic descriptions—the data is most practical when you are actively navigating and resupplying. Some readers have noted that if you are not actually hiking the trail, the information might feel dry or irrelevant. However, for those committed to a PCT hike, this book is an essential resource for logistics and planning.

Overview of the Pacific Crest Trail Data Book

The Pacific Crest Trail stretches over 4,265 km from Mexico to Canada, passing through California, Oregon, and Washington. For through-hikers and section hikers alike, planning is key to a successful journey. The Pacific Crest Trail Data Book is a compact, information-packed resource designed to help you navigate this epic trail. It provides distances, landmarks, facilities, resupply data, and other essential trail information in a streamlined format. Unlike narrative guides, this data book focuses on the numbers and logistics that matter most when you are on the trail.

What Makes This Data Book Unique?

This guide stands out for its pure utility. It does not include stories or scenic descriptions—instead, it delivers precise distances between key points, locations of water sources, camping areas, and resupply towns, plus elevations and trail junction details. The data is organised in a logical, easy-to-read format that lets you quickly find what you need. Many hikers appreciate having all the critical information in one slim volume that will not weigh down their pack. As one user noted, this is the book to get if you are planning an epic journey on the PCT—it helps you feel prepared for the adventure ahead.

Practical Tips for Through-Hikers

Be aware that trail conditions, resupply options, or land management details may change over time. Verify critical information with current sources, such as the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) or recent online forums. The book is lightweight and pocket-sized, making it easy to carry. It serves as a quick reference for distances and logistics, but for navigation, pair it with up-to-date maps or a GPS device. Remember that weather, trail closures, and personal pace can affect your schedule—use the data as a flexible guide.

How to Use This Data Book for Your Through-Hike

Start by reviewing the distances to break the trail into manageable segments. Use the resupply data to plan food drops and town stops. Note the landmarks and elevation profiles to anticipate challenging sections. The book also includes information on facilities such as post offices, stores, and campgrounds along the way. Many hikers combine this data book with a detailed map set for navigation, using the distances to track progress and estimate arrival times.

Key Features of the Data Book

The Pacific Crest Trail Data Book typically includes a comprehensive list of mileages for the entire trail, from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. It provides detailed landmark lists, including notable peaks, rivers, and road crossings. Resupply data is a core feature, indicating towns with post offices, grocery stores, and other services. The book also includes elevation profiles or altitude changes for key segments, helping through-hikers plan their daily climbs. Additionally, it may contain information on water sources, camping zones, and permit requirements. All data is presented in a concise, tabulated format for quick reference on the trail.

Why Choose This Data Book?

For anyone serious about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a reliable data book is indispensable. This volume condenses months of logistical research into a portable format, saving you time and effort in planning. It is designed to be used in conjunction with topographic maps and online resources, providing the hard numbers you need for daily decision-making. Whether you are a first-time through-hiker or a seasoned section hiker, this data book offers a solid foundation for your journey. Many experienced hikers consider it a classic reference that has helped countless adventurers successfully complete the PCT.

Final Thoughts

The Pacific Crest Trail Data Book is a practical, no-nonsense tool for anyone embarking on a PCT adventure. While it does not replace detailed maps or current condition reports, it provides the core logistical data that enables efficient planning and navigation. If you are ready to tackle one of the world's great long-distance trails, this data book is an excellent companion to help you stay on track and make the most of your hike.
