Neurobiology and Treatment of Traumatic Dissociation: Towards an Embodied Self

Neurobiology and Treatment of Traumatic Dissociation: Towards an Embodied Self

$153.43

Overview

This volume offers an exploration of the neurobiological foundations of traumatic dissociation and presents treatment strategies that incorporate an embodied understanding of selfhood. Bridging the fields of neuroscience and clinical psychology, it aims to provide a coherent framework for clinicians and researchers working with individuals who have experienced trauma. The book focuses on the intersection of brain function, dissociative processes, and somatic experience, emphasising the importance of integrating body awareness into therapeutic interventions.

Why the Neurobiology of Dissociation Matters

Traumatic dissociation is a complex phenomenon that affects a significant number of trauma survivors. Understanding its neurobiological basis is crucial for developing effective treatments. The brain's response to severe stress involves alterations in neural circuitry, particularly in regions such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. These changes can lead to disruptions in memory, emotion regulation, and sense of self. By examining these mechanisms, the book seeks to illuminate how dissociation arises and how it can be addressed clinically. The integration of neurobiology with embodied therapeutic approaches represents a promising direction for trauma care, moving beyond purely cognitive models to include the body's role in healing.

Research Foundations

The neurobiology of traumatic dissociation draws on findings from affective neuroscience, psychophysiology, and neuroimaging studies. Research has identified specific neural correlates of dissociative states, including altered activity in the insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and default mode network. These insights inform the clinical strategies discussed in the book. By grounding treatment approaches in empirical evidence, the work aims to bridge the gap between research and practice, offering clinicians tools that are both theoretically sound and practically applicable.

The Embodied Self Perspective

The concept of the embodied self is central to this work. Traumatic experiences often disrupt the connection between mind and body, leading to a fragmented sense of self. The book explores how somatic interventions can help restore this connection, fostering integration and recovery. The embodied self perspective emphasises that the body is not merely a container for the mind but an active participant in shaping consciousness and identity. By attending to bodily sensations, movement, and posture, therapists can facilitate a more holistic healing process. This approach aligns with contemporary research in embodied cognition and affective neuroscience, which underscores the importance of bodily feedback in emotional regulation and self-awareness.

Clinical Implications and Applications

The treatment of traumatic dissociation requires a nuanced understanding of both neurobiology and clinical practice. This book may offer insights into how therapists can adapt their interventions to address the specific needs
