About the Authors

Temple Grandin, a world-renowned autism advocate and bestselling author, teams up with Debra Moore, a licensed psychologist with decades of experience supporting families affected by autism. Together, they bring a unique blend of lived experience and clinical expertise to Navigating Autism: 9 Mindsets For Helping Kids on the Spectrum. Grandin's personal journey as an autistic individual offers authentic insights, while Moore's professional background ensures the advice is grounded in evidence-based practice. This collaboration provides readers with a balanced, trustworthy voice that respects both the science and the human story behind autism.

The 9 Mindsets: A Framework for Understanding and Helping Kids

At the heart of the book are nine transformative mindsets designed to reshape how parents, educators, and therapists approach autism. Unlike many guides that focus on correcting behaviours, these mindsets encourage adults to see the whole child and build on strengths. Each mindset is explored through real-life examples and actionable strategies. One mindset, for instance, urges a shift from 'fixing' behaviours to understanding their function—a principle rooted in modern behavioural science. Another emphasizes the importance of trust and connection before expecting compliance. The mindsets are not a rigid program but a flexible guide that can be adapted to each child's unique profile.

Practical Guidance for Parents, Teachers, and Caregivers

This resource shines in its practical applicability across various settings. Parents will find chapters on daily routines, sibling dynamics, and planning for adulthood. Teachers can apply the mindsets to classroom management, individualized education plans (IEPs), and inclusive practices. For therapists and healthcare providers, the book offers insights into collaborative goal-setting and family-centred care. Readers appreciate that the book answers questions they didn't know to ask, such as how to prepare a child for transitions or how to navigate the school system effectively. The authors' combined expertise provides a comprehensive yet accessible guide.

How to Get the Most Out of This Book

To fully benefit from Navigating Autism, it is best to read sequentially, as each mindset builds on the previous ones. Reflective exercises at the end of chapters help readers apply concepts to their own situations. Many readers keep the book on hand as a reference, revisiting sections as new challenges arise. The authors also discuss how to adapt the mindsets for different ages and support levels—from nonverbal children to high-functioning teens. For professionals, the book can serve as a discussion guide for team meetings or parent training sessions. Additionally, it includes resources for further learning, such as recommended books, websites, and advocacy organizations.

Why This Book is a Valuable Resource for Autism Support

Navigating Autism: 9 Mindsets For Helping Kids on the Spectrum offers a fresh perspective for anyone involved in the life of a child with autism. Rather than focusing solely on deficits, Grandin and Moore encourage readers to embrace neurodiversity and foster collaboration. The book is praised for its compassionate, practical advice and has been described as a must-read by caregivers and professionals alike. It provides a mindset shift that changes how you approach every interaction, integrating practical strategies with philosophical insights drawn from both scientific research and lived experience.
