Why a Teacher's Account Matters

In a world of educational theory, it is rare to find a book that captures the daily reality of a Montessori classroom from the teacher's perspective. Paula Polk Lillard, a seasoned educator and author of several Montessori books, offers exactly that. This account is not a manual of dos and don'ts—it is an honest, observation-based narrative that reveals how children truly learn when given freedom and respect. For parents and teachers alike, this book bridges the gap between philosophy and practice, showing the Montessori method in action without idealization.

Inside the Montessori Classroom

What does learning look like when children are trusted to direct their own education? Lillard takes readers inside her classroom, describing how children choose materials, collaborate with peers, and develop self-discipline. The prepared environment is central: child-sized furniture, inviting materials, and a calm atmosphere encourage concentration. She captures moments of deep focus, spontaneous problem-solving, and the quiet confidence that emerges when children are treated as capable individuals. This is not a theoretical treatise—it is a living document of real classroom experiences.
