Memory: A Very Short Introduction

Memory: A Very Short Introduction

Memory: A Concise Overview

In Memory: A Very Short , cognitive neuroscientist Jonathan K. Foster offers a compelling summary of how memory works. Part of Oxford University Press's acclaimed Very Short s series, this compact book distills decades of research into an easy-to-read format. It explains that memory is not a single function but a collection of systems, and it emphasizes the active, reconstructive nature of remembering. Readers will learn about the roles of different brain regions and the impact of emotion on memory. This overview sets the stage for a deeper exploration of key concepts.

Key Concepts in Memory

The book systematically covers the core components of memory:

  • Sensory memory: brief retention of sensory information.
  • Short-term (working) memory: limited capacity, temporary storage.
  • Long-term memory: vast, durable storage, subdivided into explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious) types.
  • Encoding, consolidation, retrieval: the stages through which memories are formed, stabilized, and accessed.

Foster also addresses why we forget – from interference and decay to motivated forgetting and amnesia. He draws on classic studies (such as Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve) and modern neuroimaging findings to paint a complete picture. The book emphasizes that memory is not a single faculty but a collection of systems that work together. This section is essential for understanding the building blocks of memory.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is ideal for students of psychology, neuroscience, and medicine who need a solid grounding in memory research. It also appeals to general readers curious about how their own memory works. The author's clear explanations make complex topics understandable without oversimplifying. The compact size and engaging tone allow for quick reading, yet the content is rigorous enough to serve as a reference. Many readers appreciate that it covers major theories and experiments in a balanced way, preparing them for deeper study. Whether you are a Canadian student or a lifelong learner, this book offers valuable insights.

How This Book Explains Memory

Foster uses everyday examples and classic experiments to illustrate key points. He explains that memory is not like a camcorder; it is constructive and prone to errors. He discusses famous cases like patient H.M. (who lost the ability to form new memories) to show how different brain regions support different memory systems. The book also touches on memory improvement techniques, such as mnemonics and rehearsal, but always remains grounded in science. It avoids overpromising, instead giving readers a realistic understanding of what memory can do and its limitations. This approach helps readers appreciate the complexity and fragility of memory.

Readers' Reactions

Those who have read Memory: A Very Short often comment on its ability to pack a lot of information into a small space. They find it easy to follow and engaging, noting that it hits all the major topics without getting bogged down in jargon. The book is frequently described as an ideal starting point for exploring the field of memory research. Many Canadian readers have called it a favourite to the subject.
