Its Not Always Depression

Its Not Always Depression

$60.75

Have you ever felt that your anxiety or numbness masks something deeper than depression? In Its Not Always Depression, therapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel offers a refreshing approach that integrates Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) with concepts from Transactional Analysis (TA) and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This book is not just about recognising symptoms—it’s a guide to accessing core emotions like sadness, fear, anger, and joy, allowing you to release emotional pain and rediscover authenticity. Whether you’re dealing with grief, feeling stuck, or simply seeking greater self-awareness, Hendel’s compassionate method provides a clear path toward genuine emotional health.

What Makes This Approach Different?

Unlike many self-help books that rely solely on cognitive reframing, Its Not Always Depression emphasizes experiential change through the body and therapeutic relationship. Hendel’s method is grounded in AEDP, which values the wisdom of physical sensations. The inclusion of TA and NLP concepts adds practical tools for understanding communication patterns and mindset shifts. The book avoids overly clinical language, making it accessible while still offering depth. Personal stories and client vignettes bring the concepts to life, creating a relatable and empathetic reading experience. This combination of theory and heartfelt storytelling sets the book apart as a compassionate companion for emotional exploration.

Key Concepts for Emotional Healing

Central to the book is the Change Triangle, a simple yet powerful tool with three points: core emotions, inhibitory emotions, and defences. Core emotions—anger, sadness, fear, disgust, joy, excitement, and sexual excitement—are natural responses to our environment. Inhibitory emotions like shame, guilt, and anxiety can block these core feelings, leading to distress. Defences are behaviours or thoughts we use to avoid discomfort. Through clear explanations and case examples, Hendel teaches readers to identify where they are on the triangle and how to move toward core emotions for release and integration. The book also highlights the importance of body sensations in emotional processing, aligning with somatic therapy approaches.

How Can This Book Transform Your Understanding of Emotional Pain?

Readers often find that this book illuminates the physical sensations linked to emotional suffering, helping them see beyond surface symptoms. For instance, exploring core emotions has been described as incredibly helpful for grasping high-level concepts and applying them personally. The author’s consistently supportive tone makes difficult emotional work feel safe and manageable. Many report that the book helps them process extreme grief or emotional numbing—revealing that what appears as depression can sometimes be a mask for other emotions. By learning to access and honour core emotions, individuals experience a greater sense of wholeness and relief.

Understanding the Role of 'Its Not Always Depression' in Psychotherapy & NLP

This book bridges traditional psychotherapy and practical self-help. Hendel, a certified AEDP psychotherapist, uses the Change Triangle to guide readers toward emotional clarity. Within the context of NLP and TA, the book helps recognize patterns like defences, inhibitory emotions (shame, guilt, anxiety), and core emotions. By understanding these layers, you can move beyond surface symptoms and access the healing power of authentic feelings. This integration makes the book valuable for both therapy clients and those exploring personal growth on their own.

How to Begin Your Journey with This Book

To get the most out of Its Not Always Depression, consider reading slowly and reflecting on each chapter. Keep a journal to track your emotional observations and practice using the Change Triangle with everyday experiences. Some readers find it helpful to work through exercises with a therapist or a trusted friend. The book is designed to be revisited, as each reading can reveal new layers of insight. Whether you are in therapy or exploring independently, this book offers a compassionate roadmap for understanding your emotional landscape and moving toward greater well-being.
