Overview

A History of Midwifery in the United States: The Midwife Said Fear Not provides a comprehensive account of the development of midwifery in the United States. Drawing on the title's focus, this volume traces the journey of midwifery from colonial times through to the modern era, highlighting the resilience and dedication of midwives who have shaped women's health care. The book is situated within the context of health, fitness, and dieting, specifically women's health and pregnancy and childbirth, offering readers a foundational understanding of the profession's evolution.

Historical Context

Midwifery has been an integral part of childbirth for centuries. In the United States, its history reflects broader social, legal, and medical changes. Early midwives were often community-based women who provided care during pregnancy and childbirth. Over time, the profession faced challenges from the rise of medical obstetrics and the push for formal education and licensure. Despite these challenges, midwives have remained vital to maternal care, advocating for physiological birth and reducing unnecessary interventions. The story of midwifery in the US is one of perseverance and adaptation.

Relevance to Women's Health

Understanding the history of midwifery is crucial for appreciating its role in modern women's health care. Midwives have been key providers of care during pregnancy and childbirth, offering a holistic approach that emphasizes emotional support and informed choice. This book, focused on the US experience, helps readers grasp how midwifery has contributed to improved maternal outcomes and the broader movement toward patient-centred care. The title's subtitle, The Midwife Said Fear Not, encapsulates the reassurance and empowerment that midwives provide.
