Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Internal Self-Alienation

Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Internal Self-Alienation

$76.89

Key Concepts and Approaches

Janina Fisher introduces the concept of 'fragmented selves'—the idea that trauma survivors often develop distinct internal parts or states as a survival mechanism. Rather than seeing this fragmentation as a disorder, the book reframes it as a creative adaptation. Key approaches include mindfulness, somatic awareness, and parts work (similar to Internal Family Systems therapy). The book emphasizes that healing involves acknowledging and communicating with these parts, not eliminating them. It offers concrete exercises and case examples to illustrate how survivors can gradually build trust and cooperation among their internal system.

What Makes This Book Unique?

Unlike many trauma books that focus on symptom reduction, this resource directly addresses the internal experience of alienation. Fisher's approach is distinctly phase-oriented—first stabilization, then processing, then integration—but without rigid protocols. The book stands out for its emphasis on self-compassion and the therapist's role in modelling safety. Readers have noted that it helps explain why they feel disconnected from themselves or have conflicting reactions. The practical exercises are designed to be done at one's own pace, making the material approachable even for those early in recovery.

How This Book Helps Trauma Survivors

Many readers have found this book to be a powerful tool in their healing journey. One survivor described it as transforming how they understand their own mind, noting that it helped them see their symptoms not as flaws but as adaptations. Another emphasized the relief of having a framework for the chaos of dissociative experiences. The book has been praised for its ability to articulate what many feel but cannot name: the sense of being split into different selves. By providing language and structure, it empowers readers to engage with their internal world with curiosity rather than fear.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is written for both trauma survivors and the clinicians who work with them. If you have experienced chronic or complex trauma, especially conditions like C-PTSD or dissociative disorders, you will find validation and practical strategies. Therapists, counsellors, and social workers will gain insights into working with dissociative clients. Because the language is accessible yet rigorous, it also serves as a valuable resource for students of psychology and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of trauma's impact on the self.
