Why This Book Matters for Athletes

Canadian athletes are constantly bombarded with recovery advice, from cryotherapy to compression sleeves. In Good to Go, Christie Aschwanden cuts through the noise, offering a clear, evidence-based look at what truly helps the body recover after exercise. Whether you're a weekend warrior or a professional competitor, understanding the science behind recovery can help you train smarter, avoid injury, and get the most out of your efforts.

Aschwanden's engaging and witty writing style makes complex topics enjoyable to read, appealing to both science enthusiasts and those new to the subject. The book has been praised for its informative yet approachable tone, making it essential reading for anyone who exercises regularly.

Common Myths and Misconceptions

The recovery industry is filled with products promising faster healing and better performance, but many claims don't hold up to scrutiny. Good to Go systematically debunks popular myths, such as whether ice baths truly reduce inflammation or simply numb pain, and whether protein timing is as critical as we think. By examining studies and interviewing experts, Aschwanden provides a clear-eyed look at what the evidence actually supports.

This section is particularly valuable for athletes who want to avoid wasting time and money on ineffective methods. From cryotherapy to compression gear, the book reveals which recovery tools are backed by science and which are just hype.

Understanding Recovery Science

Recovery is a cornerstone of athletic performance, yet much of what we think we know is based on tradition rather than evidence. In Good to Go, Aschwanden takes readers on a journey through the curious world of recovery science, explaining how the body repairs itself after exercise and why recovery is just as important as the workout itself. By exploring the latest research, she reveals that many popular recovery methods may not deliver the promised benefits, while others—like sleep and active recovery—are surprisingly effective.

The book also delves into the placebo effect in recovery, highlighting how our beliefs can influence outcomes. This knowledge empowers athletes to make informed decisions about their own recovery protocols.

What Does the Science Say About Recovery?

Aschwanden challenges the status quo by asking tough questions: Do we really need to stretch after a run? Is foam rolling worth the hype? The book systematically evaluates common recovery techniques and the evidence behind them. Readers learn that some widely accepted practices have little scientific support, while others—such as proper nutrition and adequate sleep—are backed by robust data.

The author emphasizes that recovery isn't a one-size-fits-all process. Individual variability plays a huge role, so what works for one athlete may not work for another. Experimentation and personalization are key.

Practical Takeaways from the Book

While the science can be complex, the practical advice in Good to Go is accessible and actionable. Key takeaways include the importance of sleep for recovery, the role of nutrition in tissue repair, and the benefits of active recovery over complete rest. The book provides a framework for evaluating recovery strategies, helping readers make evidence-based decisions about their own routines.

Readers will come away with a deeper understanding of their bodies and a personalized approach to recovery that prioritizes evidence over hype. The book encourages a mindset shift: recovery isn't passive—it's an active part of training that deserves as much attention as the workout itself.
