About the Author

Prof Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) was a German-Swiss psychiatrist and philosopher who profoundly influenced existential philosophy and psychopathology. He held academic positions at Heidelberg University and the University of Basel. Jaspers' work bridges clinical psychiatry and philosophical inquiry, making him a unique figure in medical humanities. His emphasis on the patient's lived experience laid groundwork for person-centred approaches in mental health care.

Overview of General Psychopathology (Vol. 1)

Karl Jaspers' landmark work in psychiatry remains essential for clinicians and scholars alike. This volume introduces his systematic phenomenological approach to understanding mental illness, focusing on the subjective experience of patients. First published in 1913, it covers general concepts such as the classification of psychopathological phenomena, the nature of delusions, hallucinations, and disturbances of consciousness and memory. Jaspers' method continues to shape diagnostic practices and theoretical frameworks in modern psychiatry. This edition presents a clear translation, making it accessible to contemporary readers while preserving the depth of the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Volume 1 and Volume 2?

Volume 1 focuses on general concepts of psychopathology, including disturbances of consciousness, memory, perception, and thought. Volume 2 applies these concepts to specific psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia and affective disorders. Both volumes are necessary for a complete understanding of Jaspers' system.

Is this book still relevant for modern psychiatry?

Yes. While diagnostic systems have evolved, Jaspers' phenomenological approach remains a cornerstone of clinical assessment, particularly in understanding subjective experiences. Many training programs continue to use this text for its conceptual clarity.

Does this edition include DSM-5 or ICD-11 criteria?

No. This edition preserves Jaspers' original classification, which predates modern diagnostic manuals. However, his concepts still inform current diagnostic thinking.

General Psychopathology (Vol. 1) is a timeless resource for anyone seeking to understand the foundations of psychiatric thought. Karl Jaspers' meticulous analysis and humanistic perspective offer unparalleled depth. Whether you are a student, clinician, or researcher, this volume will enrich your appreciation of mental health and illness.
