Functional Behavioral Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment: A Complete System for Education and Mental Health Settings

Functional Behavioral Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment: A Complete System for Education and Mental Health Settings

$150.16

Why This Book Matters for Education and Mental Health

In educational and mental health settings, challenging behaviours can significantly impede learning, social development, and therapeutic progress. Traditional disciplinary or reactive approaches often fail because they do not address the underlying reasons for behaviour. Functional Behavioural Assessment (FBA) offers a proactive, evidence-based alternative. By systematically identifying the purpose or function of a behaviour—such as gaining attention, escaping a task, or obtaining sensory input—professionals can design targeted interventions that teach appropriate replacement behaviours and reduce problematic ones. This book provides a comprehensive resource for conducting FBAs, making functional diagnoses, and developing effective treatment plans across a variety of environments, from schools to clinics.

What the Book Covers

This complete system guides readers through the entire FBA process. It begins with methods for collecting data through interviews, observations, and functional analysis. The next stage focuses on interpreting that data to pinpoint the function of behaviour, forming a functional diagnosis. Finally, the book offers strategies for creating and implementing behaviour intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to each individual's needs. Throughout, the emphasis is on practical application, ensuring that assessments lead directly to effective interventions.

Key Features

  • Structured Framework: The system provides a clear, step-by-step approach that can be applied by beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
  • Data-Driven Decisions: Emphasis on collecting and analysing data to inform every stage, from assessment to treatment evaluation.
  • Behavioural Focus: Aligns with principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) and positive behaviour support, making it suitable for behaviour analysts, psychologists, and educators.
  • Versatile Settings: Applicable in schools, mental health centres, group homes, and other environments where challenging behaviours occur.

Who Should Use This Book

This resource is designed for a wide range of professionals, including school psychologists, behaviour analysts (BCBAs), special education teachers, mental health counsellors, and social workers. It also serves as a valuable textbook for graduate courses in behaviour assessment and intervention. The system encourages collaboration among team members—parents, teachers, therapists—by providing a common language and framework. It builds competence in conducting FBAs and designing effective behaviour support plans, ultimately improving outcomes for individuals with challenging behaviours.

How the Book Helps Practitioners

FBA is a critical skill for many helping professionals, but it can be complex to implement without a clear guide. This book simplifies the process by breaking it down into manageable steps. It includes reproducible forms and templates (check with the publisher for digital access) that streamline data collection and analysis. The emphasis on function-based thinking helps practitioners move beyond surface-level symptoms to address root causes. By using this system, professionals can replace guesswork with confidence, ensuring that interventions are both effective and efficient. The book also addresses common challenges, such as dealing with multiple functions or working with individuals who have limited communication skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this book suitable for someone new to FBA?

Yes. The system is designed to be accessible for beginners, with foundational concepts explained before moving to advanced topics. Experienced practitioners will also find the integrated approach valuable for refining their practice.

The print edition includes reproducible forms. For digital resources, check with the publisher.

Can this system be used with adults?

While many examples focus on children and adolescents, the principles of FBA apply across the lifespan. The system can be adapted for adult mental health settings, residential facilities, and other contexts.

How does this book differ from other FBA books?

It offers a complete, integrated system that combines assessment, diagnosis, and treatment into one cohesive process. It prioritises practical application with ready-to-use tools and clear decision-making guidelines.
