About the Author

Eva Illouz, a distinguished sociologist and author of several influential works on the sociology of emotions, brings her characteristic insight to Explosive Emotions. Her research focuses on the intersection of culture, capitalism, and emotional life, and she has taught at major universities worldwide. Known for clarity and depth, Illouz bridges academic theory with everyday experience, making this hardcover edition a compelling read.

What Makes This Book Relevant Today?

In an era of political turmoil, social media echo chambers, and rising anxiety, Explosive Emotions offers a timely framework for understanding our collective emotional state. The book addresses why public discourse has become so heated and how societal structures contribute to personal stress. By connecting individual feelings to larger social patterns, Illouz provides readers with tools to navigate their emotional landscape with greater awareness. This is not merely an academic text; it's a guide for anyone trying to make sense of the emotional turbulence of modern life, including the particular dynamics of Canadian political culture. It also offers a critical perspective on how emotions are manipulated by political and commercial interests, making it an indispensable resource for informed citizenship.

Key Themes and Arguments

Illouz identifies several key mechanisms through which society shapes emotions. She examines the role of mass media in creating a culture of constant emotional arousal, the influence of economic systems in commodifying feelings, and the way political polarization fuels explosive reactions. The book delves into the concept of "emotional capitalism," where emotions are both a product and a driver of market forces. It also explores how social media platforms incentivize outrage and viral sentiment, leading to a collective emotional volatility. Each chapter builds a compelling case that our emotional experiences are not just personal but are orchestrated by larger social dynamics. Illouz's arguments are backed by sociological research and international case studies, making the book both intellectually rigorous and deeply relevant to current affairs. She also discusses the historical evolution of emotional norms, showing how modern society has intensified certain feelings while suppressing others. The interplay between personal identity and social expectations is a recurring theme, highlighting how we are all participants in an emotional economy that shapes our daily lives.

Overview

In Explosive Emotions: How Modern Society Shapes What We Feel, renowned sociologist Eva Illouz investigates the profound ways our social environment moulds our emotional lives. This hardcover edition offers a rigorous yet accessible exploration of how contemporary culture—from political discourse to digital media—generates intense, often volatile feelings. Illouz argues that emotions are not purely personal but are deeply embedded in the structures of modern society. The book challenges readers to reconsider the source of their anger, anxiety, and enthusiasm, revealing the societal forces that amplify emotional responses. With incisive analysis and compelling examples, this work is essential for anyone seeking to understand the emotional undercurrents of today's political and social landscape. Drawing on case studies from around the world, Illouz demonstrates how emotions like fear, hope, and indignation are shaped by institutional and cultural frameworks, making them a central feature of modern political life.

Why Choose This Book?

This hardcover edition is a durable and premium addition to any library. Explosive Emotions stands out for its interdisciplinary approach, blending sociology, psychology, and political science. It avoids jargon, making complex ideas accessible to a broad audience.
