Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction

Consciousness: A Very Short Introduction

$47.53

Overview

Consciousness: A Very Short , written by Susan Blackmore, is part of Oxford University Press's acclaimed Very Short s series. This book offers a compact yet thorough exploration of one of the most perplexing topics in psychology and philosophy: consciousness. The series is designed to provide authoritative and accessible overviews of complex subjects, making them ideal for students, professionals, and general readers alike. In this volume, Blackmore distils decades of research and debate into a concise format, guiding readers through the essential questions that have puzzled thinkers for centuries.

About the Author

Susan Blackmore is a psychologist and writer known for her work on consciousness and memes. She has contributed to the field through her clear, engaging writing and her willingness to tackle difficult questions with rigour and honesty. Her expertise and accessible style make her an excellent guide for anyone seeking to understand the mysteries of conscious experience.

Key Themes in Consciousness Studies

Consciousness studies encompass a wide range of topics, from the nature of subjective experience to the neural correlates of awareness. Fundamental questions include: What is consciousness? How does it arise from physical processes? Why is it so difficult to explain? These questions lie at the heart of philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Researchers explore altered states such as dreaming and meditation, the unity of conscious experience, and the relationship between mind and brain. The hard problem of consciousness—explaining why there is something it is like to be a conscious being—remains a central challenge. Contemporary theories include integrated information theory, global workspace theory, and higher-order thought theories, each offering different perspectives on how consciousness might emerge from neural activity.

Relevance to Developmental Psychology

Though this book does not focus exclusively on development, understanding consciousness is crucial for developmental psychology. The emergence of self-awareness in infancy, the development of theory of mind, and changes in conscious experience across the lifespan are all topics that intersect with the study of consciousness. For instance, how do children come to understand that others have minds? How does the sense of self evolve from early childhood to adulthood? These questions are informed by the broader theories and debates presented in Blackmore's . By grounding oneself in the fundamentals of consciousness, students and researchers in developmental psychology can better appreciate the complexities of cognitive and emotional development.

Why This Book Matters

This Very Short stands out for its clarity and breadth. It does not shy away from difficult questions, yet it remains accessible to newcomers. The book presents multiple viewpoints, encouraging critical thinking and independent exploration. For readers who want a solid foundation without committing to a lengthy textbook, this is an excellent starting point. It also serves as a valuable reference for those already familiar with the field, providing a concise reminder of key debates and concepts.

Consciousness: A Very Short successfully demystifies a complex topic. Susan Blackmore's expertise and engaging prose make the subject approachable, while the Oxford series format ensures that the content is reliable and well-researched. Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply a curious reader, this book will deepen your understanding of consciousness and inspire further exploration.
