What Makes This Guide Unique for Women?

While trauma affects everyone, Call of the Wild zeroes in on the distinct ways women's bodies hold and recover from traumatic experiences. Author Kimberly Ann Johnson, a seasoned somatic practitioner and birth worker, brings a nuanced understanding of the female animal body—how biology, cycles, and social conditioning intersect with healing. Readers have praised the book as a profound deep dive that is both illuminating and rich with insight, offering a depth that invites repeated revisiting.

Unlike many one-size-fits-all approaches, this guide acknowledges that women often face unique pressures and physiological realities. It doesn't offer quick fixes; instead, it provides a comprehensive toolkit for anyone committed to a somatic healing journey. Whether you are dealing with complex PTSD, birth trauma, or cumulative stress, the exercises and wisdom are designed to resonate with women's lives.

Somatic Practices for Reclaiming Your Power

The heart of the book lies in its actionable somatic practices. Johnson teaches you how to tune into bodily sensations, use breath and movement to release tension, and build capacity for nervous system regulation. These are not just relaxation methods—they are tools to awaken your inner power and channel it for good. Topics include grounding, orienting, pendulation, and resourcing, all explained in clear, practical language.

Each chapter builds on the previous, creating a progression from understanding your nervous system to actively reshaping your responses. The author's ability to hold space for complexity is widely praised; she acknowledges that healing is not linear and that each person's path is unique. By practising the exercises, you may find yourself responding to triggers with greater ease and cultivating a deeper sense of agency.

Understanding Trauma and the Nervous System

Trauma impacts not only the mind but the entire body. In Call of the Wild, Johnson explores how our nervous system responds to overwhelming events and how we can intentionally work with it to foster healing. The framework is rooted in somatic practices—body-based techniques that help regulate the nervous system and restore a sense of safety. Rather than focusing solely on talk therapy, she emphasizes the role of the body's innate wisdom, inviting readers to reconnect with their physical selves as a path to resilience.

The book also examines the social nervous system, a concept central to understanding how we relate to others and ourselves. This perspective has been profoundly helpful for readers, offering clarity on longstanding patterns of survival and connection. By learning to track nervous system states, you can shift from hyperarousal or shutdown toward a more balanced, grounded presence.

How to Use This Book as a Resource

Call of the Wild is designed for slow, intentional reading. Many readers have initially devoured it quickly, only to realize they need to return to the exercises more deliberately. The structure encourages digestion over time—each chapter ends with practical prompts and somatic invitations. Keep a journal nearby as you read, and allow yourself to move through the material at a pace that feels supportive.

This is not a one-time read but a companion for your healing journey. Whether you are new to somatic work or already familiar with the field, Johnson's depth of knowledge offers fresh insights. The hardcover format makes it a durable addition to your library, ready for repeated use. Consider it an investment in your long-term well-being.
