What Makes “Call of the Wild” a Unique Guide?

Kimberly Ann Johnson offers a fresh perspective that blends personal narrative with practical tools. Unlike clinical manuals, this book invites readers into an exploration of their own animal bodies. It emphasizes that healing is not a linear process but a wild, intuitive journey. Readers appreciate how the author holds space for complexity and nuance, making the content accessible without oversimplifying. The book provides specific exercises, reflective prompts, and insights drawn from years of experience. It is not a one-size-fits-all solution but a companion for those ready to reclaim their power.

Who Can Benefit from This Book?

Written primarily for women, this book speaks to anyone who has experienced trauma or chronic stress. It is especially relevant for those who feel stuck in traditional therapy or who are looking for body-based approaches. Survivors of complex trauma, sexual abuse, or medical trauma may find resonance. The book also offers insights for practitioners, yoga teachers, and healers seeking to deepen their understanding. It is not a replacement for professional care but a supportive resource. Readers often report feeling seen and empowered, as the content validates their experiences and offers tangible steps forward.

Understanding Trauma and the Nervous System

Trauma leaves a deep imprint on the body and mind. It disrupts the autonomic nervous system, often leaving survivors in a state of hyperarousal or shutdown. This book explores how trauma can be addressed not just through talk therapy, but by reconnecting with the body’s innate wisdom and placing it at the centre of the healing process. It draws on somatic practices that help regulate the nervous system, restore a sense of safety, and build resilience. For women especially, trauma can manifest in unique ways due to hormonal cycles, life transitions, and societal pressures. Understanding these connections is the first step toward healing.

Somatic Practices for Healing

Somatics is about listening to the body’s messages. This guide introduces practices like breathwork, movement, and touch to release stored trauma. These techniques help calm the nervous system and foster a felt sense of safety. The book explains the social nervous system and how connection with others plays a role in recovery. It also addresses the importance of boundaries and honouring one’s own rhythm. By integrating these practices, readers can begin to shift from survival mode to a state of greater ease and vitality. The emphasis is on agency and self-compassion, not force or willpower.

Key Themes Explored

The book dives into several interrelated themes: the nervous system’s role in trauma recovery, the wisdom of the female body, the power of community, and the call to use one’s healing for collective good. It challenges the notion that trauma is a lifelong sentence and instead frames it as a doorway to transformation. Johnson explores how our personal wounds connect to larger social issues, urging readers to move from survival to contribution. The tone is both grounded and visionary, blending science with soul. Each chapter builds on the last, creating a cohesive narrative that is both informative and inspiring.
