Body-Centred Psychotherapy: The Hakomi Method

Key Concepts in the Hakomi Method

The Hakomi Method is built upon several foundational principles: mindfulness, non-violence, body-mind integration, and unity. These core ideas shape the therapeutic process, allowing clients to observe their present-moment experience and uncover unconscious beliefs. Each principle is explored in depth in the book, with practical applications for therapy sessions.

  • Mindfulness: Clients are guided to observe their present-moment experience without judgment, allowing unconscious beliefs and patterns to surface gently. This practice helps clients develop self-awareness and insight into their habitual responses.
  • Non-Violence: The therapeutic process is gentle and respectful, avoiding force or confrontation. The therapist creates a safe environment where clients can explore vulnerable emotions at their own pace.
  • Body-Mind Integration: Physical sensations, posture, and movement are seen as direct expressions of inner states. By attending to the body, clients access deeper levels of experience that may not be accessible through talk therapy alone.
  • Unity: The method views the individual as a whole, where emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects are interconnected. Healing occurs when all dimensions of the self are honoured and integrated.

About Ron Kurtz

Ron Kurtz, the founder of the Hakomi Method, was a pioneering figure in body-centred psychotherapy. His work was profoundly influenced by his studies with Moshe Feldenkrais, among others, which shaped his understanding of the body-mind interface. Kurtz combined elements of Eastern mindfulness with Western psychological theory, creating a holistic therapeutic model that has been embraced by practitioners worldwide. He taught Hakomi internationally and authored this definitive text to share his approach with a broader audience.

Overview of Body-Centred Psychotherapy

Rather than focusing solely on verbal dialogue, Body-Centred Psychotherapy: The Hakomi Method brings attention to the body as a gateway to the unconscious. Through mindfulness, clients learn to observe physical sensations, posture, and movements that reveal deeper emotional themes. Developed by Ron Kurtz in the 1970s, this method has influenced many contemporary somatic therapies. This book serves as both an and a manual for those wishing to understand and apply the principles of body-centred work. It is structured to guide readers from theory to practical application, making it suitable for both newcomers and experienced therapists.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is a valuable resource for therapists, counsellors, social workers, and bodyworkers interested in integrating somatic approaches into their practice. It is also beneficial for anyone interested in holistic health, spirituality, and personal development. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a student of psychotherapy, the Hakomi Method offers insights that can enrich your work and personal life. Additionally, individuals seeking to deepen their self-understanding and those drawn to mindfulness-based healing will find this book illuminating.
