About the Author: Brenié Brown

Brenié Brown, PhD, LMSW, is a research professor at the University of Houston and a bestselling author whose work on vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy has resonated globally. Her TEDx talk, “The Power of Vulnerability,” is among the most viewed TED talks worldwide, and her research has been featured on Oprah Winfrey Network, PBS, and NPR. In Atlas of the Heart, Brown synthesizes two decades of research into a practical toolkit for emotional literacy, making complex psychological concepts accessible and actionable for everyday life.

Understanding the Book: Atlas of the Heart

Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience is a transformative hardcover book by Brenié Brown. It takes readers on a journey through the rich landscape of human emotions, offering a comprehensive vocabulary for the feelings that shape our lives. Drawing from extensive social research, Brown identifies and explores eighty-seven emotions and experiences, providing a framework for self-understanding and deeper connection with others. Whether you're navigating social interactions, pursuing personal growth, or simply curious about human experience, this book serves as both a guide and a reference—a true atlas for the heart.

Core Themes and Emotional Vocabulary

  • Emotional Vocabulary: Learn to name and understand a wide range of emotions, from “place” to “foreboding joy” to “empathy.”
  • Connection and Belonging: Discover how vulnerability and courage foster meaningful relationships.
  • Resilience: Understand how emotions like shame and anxiety can be navigated with self-compassion.
  • Social Interaction: Gain tools for communicating more effectively in personal and professional settings.

Why This Book Stands Out

Unlike typical self-help books, Atlas of the Heart is built on rigorous qualitative research. Brown and her team interviewed thousands of people to map how we actually experience and express emotions. The result is a detailed taxonomy that goes beyond basic happiness, sadness, anger, and fear. Readers will discover nuanced distinctions—for example, the difference between envy and jealousy, or between shame and guilt. Each emotion is accompanied by a clear definition, real-life examples, and insights into how it shows up in social contexts. This depth makes the book invaluable for anyone looking to improve their emotional intelligence and communication skills.

The book also features beautiful illustrations by Simon Zigun that visually represent each emotion cluster, making the content even more engaging. Brown's writing style is warm, conversational, and honest—she shares personal stories and research findings without jargon, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences.

Practical Benefits and Applications

Whether you struggle to articulate your feelings or consider yourself emotionally fluent, Atlas of the Heart offers practical benefits. It can help you:

  • Identify and label your emotions with precision
  • Improve communication in relationships by using a shared language
  • Reduce conflict by understanding the emotional drivers behind behaviour
  • Build greater self-awareness and empathy
  • Feel more confident in social situations

Many readers find themselves returning to specific chapters long after their first read, using the book as a reference for navigating challenging emotions and building stronger connections with those around them.
