About the Authors

Temple Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and a world-renowned consultant to the livestock industry. She is also one of the most celebrated advocates for individuals with autism. Her unique perspective has earned her numerous awards and a place in the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Catherine Johnson, a writer specializing in science and medicine, co-authored the book, helping to make Grandin’s ideas accessible to a broad audience. Together, they have created a work that resonates with both the head and the heart.

Key Insights from the Book

The book covers a wide range of topics, including the role of fear in animal behaviour, the importance of specific environments for animal welfare, and how animals communicate nonverbally. Grandin debunks common myths, such as the idea that predators kill for sport or that animals lack emotions. She presents compelling evidence that animals experience joy, grief, and even a sense of fairness. One standout section explores how solving behavioural problems in animals often requires changing the environment rather than the animal itself—a principle that has practical applications for pet owners and farmers alike.

How Autism Provides a Window into Animal Minds

Grandin argues that people with autism often think in pictures and details, much like animals do. This neurological overlap gives her a unique ability to interpret animal emotions, fears, and motivations. She explains how animals think visually, notice small changes in their environment, and respond to sensory stimuli in ways that neurotypical people might miss. By understanding these parallels, readers gain a deeper appreciation for the inner lives of animals—from household pets to livestock.

Who Should Read This Book?

Whether you are a pet owner, a farmer, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply curious about the natural world, Animals in Translation offers something valuable. Science students will appreciate the research-based approach, while casual readers will enjoy the accessible storytelling. Grandin’s ability to translate complex scientific concepts into everyday language makes this a perfect read for anyone who has ever wondered what animals are thinking. The book also provides profound insights for those interested in autism, showing how a different way of seeing can be a gift.

What Readers Are Saying

Readers consistently praise the book for its easy-to-read style and wealth of fascinating facts. Many note that it changes how they view their own pets and animals in general. The real-world examples are called out as especially valuable—whether explaining why a horse spooks or how to calm an anxious dog. Others highlight the insightful parallels between autistic cognition and animal perception, calling it an eye-opening read that bridges two complex worlds. Overall, the book is described as a must-read for animal lovers and science enthusiasts alike.

Why This Book Matters

In a world where humans often misunderstand or underestimate animals, Animals in Translation builds a bridge of empathy and understanding. It challenges readers to think differently and to recognize the intelligence and emotional depth of the creatures we share our planet with. By combining personal narrative, scientific inquiry, and practical wisdom, this book remains a vital resource for improving animal welfare and deepening our connection to the natural world.

Unlocking the Secrets of Animal Behaviour

Why do animals act the way they do? How do they perceive the world? In Animals in Translation, Temple Grandin—a renowned animal scientist who also happens to have autism—offers a groundbreaking perspective. By drawing on her own experiences and cutting-edge research, Grandin reveals that the autistic mind shares surprising similarities with the animal mind. This book is not just a study of animal behaviour; it is a journey into the sensory world of creatures great and small, written with clarity and compassion.
