Why This Book Matters Now

The ongoing debates about healthcare reform, drug pricing, and insurance practices make understanding the system more critical than ever. For Canadian readers, An American Sickness offers a valuable look at the pitfalls of a profit-driven model—lessons that resonate north of the border. Elisabeth Rosenthal reveals how incentives for overprescribing, administrative bloat, and opaque pricing have driven costs sky-high. This book equips you with the context needed to engage in informed discussions about your own healthcare, whether you're a student, policymaker, or patient. By grasping the economic forces at play, you can see beyond partisan talking points and envision smart solutions.

Key Topics Covered

  • How community hospitals and independent practices became profit centres
  • Pharmaceutical pricing strategies and why medications cost so much
  • Insurance industry practices that limit access, deny claims, and inflate expenses
  • The rise of surprise billing and the lack of price transparency
  • Private equity's role in buying up practices and driving up costs
  • Practical steps for patients to reduce medical expenses and advocate for change

An Insider's Look at the Healthcare Crisis

In An American Sickness, Elisabeth Rosenthal delivers a powerful and revealing examination of the US healthcare system's transformation into a profit-driven industry. Through meticulous research and compelling storytelling, the book uncovers the forces that turned medical care into big business—often at the expense of patients. Rosenthal charts the evolution from an era when doctors and hospitals prioritized care over profit to today's landscape dominated by private equity and consolidation. More than just a diagnosis, the book offers practical strategies for navigating the system and fighting back. Readers gain a deeper understanding of skyrocketing costs, insurance complexities, and the real price of American healthcare. This is an essential resource for anyone who has ever received a confusing bill or wondered why treatments cost so much.

What Makes This Book Different?

Unlike many policy-heavy texts, An American Sickness is remarkably accessible. Rosenthal breaks down complex economic and regulatory issues into digestible narratives. Each chapter focuses on a specific component—from emergency rooms to prescription drugs—explaining not just how it works, but why it works that way. The book doesn't merely describe problems; it equips readers with actionable steps to protect themselves. As one reader noted, it's "easy to read and provoking." The combination of systemic critique and personal empowerment sets this book apart from other healthcare exposés. It's a guide for both understanding the crisis and finding practical ways to cope.

Critical and Reader Reception

Since its publication, the book has garnered widespread acclaim for its thoroughness and clarity. Readers have described it as "eye opening" and a "devastating" look at the broken health insurance system. Many praise its systematic approach: it examines each part of the healthcare system and provides a complete story of why we are in a cost crisis. The information is both specific and shocking, revealing new forms of corruption that prioritize profit over patient well-being. One reviewer noted that the total cost of medical care in the US is high and the results are far from ideal, comparing the layers of problems to an onion. Overall, readers agree that An American Sickness is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the true state of American healthcare and how to take it back.
