Why Readers Choose This Book

The historical significance of this edition draws both collectors and those in recovery. The unedited stories offer an authentic, raw glimpse into the early days of AA. Its compact hardcover format makes it a lasting addition to any recovery library. Many readers appreciate the directness of the original language, which cuts to the core of the program's message.

What This Book Covers

The volume is organized into two main parts. The first explains the 12-step program in detail, including the famous chapter "How It Works" and the steps themselves. It describes the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of alcoholism and outlines a practical plan for recovery. The second section contains first-person accounts of men and women who found sobriety through the program, offering hope and real-world application. Key topics include:

  • The nature of alcoholism and the concept of powerlessness over alcohol.
  • The role of a Higher Power in recovery.
  • Taking a moral inventory and making amends.
  • The importance of helping other alcoholics.
  • Maintaining sobriety through sponsorship and daily practice.

Overview

More than just a book, the original 1939 edition of Alcoholics Anonymous is a cultural milestone. It comprises the foundational text of the 12-step recovery program, written by Bill W. and early fellowship members in the language of the times. This edition preserves the unaltered text, offering modern readers a direct connection to the origins of the movement. Whether you are exploring recovery or deepening your understanding, this volume provides timeless wisdom for living a life free from alcohol.

Who Should Read This Book

This book is indispensable for individuals struggling with alcohol use disorder, as well as their families and friends. It offers a straightforward, non-judgmental path to recovery grounded in practical steps. What Makes the Original 1939 Edition Special?

This is the first printing of the Big Book, often referred to as the "first edition." It contains the original text as it appeared nearly a century ago, including the personal stories of the first 100 members who achieved sobriety through AA. Unlike later editions that underwent revisions and additions, this version preserves the unedited accounts and original language of the early fellowship. For collectors and those interested in the history of addiction recovery, this edition provides a direct link to the roots of the 12-step movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as the current edition used in AA meetings?

Yes and no. The content of the 12 steps and basic principles remain the same, but later editions include additional appendices and updated personal stories. This edition contains only the original text from 1939.

Is the book suitable for someone new to recovery?

Absolutely. Many find the original language powerful and direct. However, it does reflect the vocabulary and attitudes of its time, which may differ from modern sensibilities. It remains a highly effective resource.

Can this book help a family member understand alcoholism?

Yes. The book explains the nature of alcoholism in terms that both the sufferer and their loved ones can understand. It also offers guidance for families through the program's principles.

Does this edition include the 12 Traditions?

No. The Twelve Traditions were developed later and are not part of the original 1939 text. They appear in subsequent editions and other AA literature.
