What This Book Covers

Organized chronologically, Emily Dufton's Addiction, Inc. traces the evolution of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) from methadone maintenance in the 1970s to the rise of buprenorphine and corporate-owned clinics. It delves into the tension between evidence-based care and moralistic approaches, the role of the pharmaceutical industry, and the grassroots movements that fought for patient rights. Along the way, Dufton challenges conventional narratives about the war on drugs, revealing how privatization and partisan politics derailed a transformative public health initiative.

Key Takeaways

  • Historical Roots: MAT originated in the Nixon era amid an uneasy alliance between public health and law enforcement.
  • Policy Failures: Federal inaction and privatization undermined a promising national treatment system.
  • Stigma vs. Science: Persistent bias against medication-assisted approaches persists despite decades of evidence.
  • Lessons for Today: Past missteps connect to current challenges in the opioid crisis and debates over harm reduction.

Why This Book Matters for Understanding Addiction Treatment

Few topics in drug policy are as contentious as MAT, and Dufton's gripping account wades into the fray. From the early days of methadone clinics to the controversial expansion of Suboxone, this book reveals how politics, profit, and stigma shaped the nation's response to addiction. It is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand why evidence-based treatments remain out of reach for so many, especially in Canada where similar debates unfold.

About the Author

Emily Dufton is a historian and writer whose work focuses on drug policy and addiction. Her research brings clarity to complex topics, making this book a valuable resource for professionals and concerned citizens alike.

Who Should Read This Book

  • Healthcare providers working in addiction medicine or recovery support.
  • Students and scholars in public health, history, and drug policy.

What Makes This Book Essential?

Unlike many works on addiction, Addiction, Inc. dives into the specific mechanisms—privatization, lobbying, and moral panic—that derailed a potentially transformative public health initiative. Dufton’s narrative is both academically rigorous and accessible, weaving together archival research with compelling human stories. It fills a critical gap in the literature, offering a nuanced view of MAT often missing from public discourse.

Many note that it offers a fresh perspective on the drug war, highlighting the forgotten role of medication-assisted treatment. The book has been described as eye-opening and essential for anyone interested in drug policy reform.
