$47.68

Addiction is a complex and often misunderstood condition that affects millions of people worldwide. This book, Addiction: A Very Short , offers a concise and authoritative guide to understanding the nature of addiction, its causes, and the various approaches to treatment and recovery. As part of the Very Short s series published by Oxford University Press, this volume provides an accessible entry point for anyone looking to learn more about substance abuse and behavioural addictions.

About the Very Short s Series

The Very Short s series is known for its ability to distil complex subjects into compact, readable books. Each volume is written by an expert in the field, offering a balanced and up-to-date overview. The series covers a vast range of topics, from philosophy and history to science and health. Addiction: A Very Short follows this tradition, presenting the key concepts and debates surrounding addiction in a clear and engaging manner.

Key Themes in Addiction

While specific content varies, books in this series typically cover the fundamental aspects of their subject. In the case of addiction, readers can expect discussions on the neurobiology of addiction, the psychological and social factors that contribute to substance use, and the various treatment modalities available. The book also addresses the stigma associated with addiction and the importance of evidence-based approaches to prevention and recovery. It explores the impact of addiction on individuals, families, and society at large, providing a holistic view of the issue.

Why Read This Book?

Whether you are a student beginning your studies in psychology or public health, a healthcare professional seeking a quick refresher, or someone personally affected by addiction, this book offers valuable insights. Its concise format makes it easy to digest, while the depth of content ensures that readers come away with a solid foundation. The book does not require prior knowledge, making it suitable for a general audience. It also serves as a starting point for further reading, with references and suggestions for additional resources.

Who Is This For?

This volume is designed for a broad audience. It is ideal for university students in fields such as psychology, sociology, and medicine who need a quick overview of addiction. It is also useful for policymakers and practitioners working in addiction services who want a concise reference. Additionally, individuals who have personal experience with addiction—either their own or that of a loved one—will find the book helpful for understanding the condition and the options available.

Understanding Addiction

Addiction is now widely recognized as a chronic brain disorder that involves compulsive substance use despite harmful consequences. It is characterized by changes in brain chemistry and circuitry, which can lead to intense cravings and loss of control. However, addiction is not simply a matter of willpower; it is influenced by genetic, environmental, and developmental factors. This book explains these complexities in plain language, helping readers to appreciate why addiction is so challenging to overcome and why compassionate, evidence-based treatment is essential.

Treatment Approaches

There are many different approaches to treating addiction, ranging from medication-assisted treatment to behavioural therapies and support groups. This book provides an overview of the most effective treatments, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, and 12-step programmes. It also discusses harm reduction strategies and the role of family and community in recovery. By presenting a balanced view of various options, the book helps readers understand that recovery is possible and that different paths work for different people.

Social and Legal Contexts

Addiction does not occur in a vacuum; it is deeply influenced by social and legal contexts. This book examines how laws and policies around drugs and alcohol affect addiction rates and treatment availability. It also explores the social determinants of addiction, such as poverty, trauma, and inequality. Understanding these broader factors is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. The book encourages readers to think critically about the societal responses to addiction and to advocate for policies that reduce harm and support recovery.
