Wrightsman's Psychology and the Legal System is a staple for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology and law across Canada. It is widely used in forensic psychology programmes, pre-law streams, and criminal justice departments. Students pursuing careers in law, law enforcement, corrections, or mental health will find the content directly relevant. The book also serves as a valuable reference for legal professionals—including lawyers, judges, and paralegals—who wish to understand psychological research that informs their practice. Core Content Areas in This Textbook

This textbook systematically covers key topics defining the psychology-law interface. Readers examine the accuracy and malleability of eyewitness memory, including factors that lead to misidentification. The text explores jury selection and decision-making processes, analysing how biases, group dynamics, and evidentiary rules shape verdicts. Another major section addresses forensic assessment—the psychological evaluation of defendants, witnesses, and victims in legal contexts. Topics include competency to stand trial, insanity defences, and risk assessment for future dangerousness. The book also discusses the admissibility of expert testimony, the psychology of confessions, and the impact of pre-trial publicity on fair trials. Each chapter integrates classic studies with contemporary research, offering a balanced perspective on controversies and emerging trends. Special attention is given to ethical issues and the role of psychologists as consultants and expert witnesses.

It incorporates high-profile cases, legislative changes, and new empirical findings to keep the material current. The book's organisation allows instructors to customise reading sequences, and its writing style balances scholarly depth with readability.
