Why Has This Book Remained a Best-Seller for Decades?

With over 40 million copies sold worldwide, What to Expect When You're Expecting has become a cultural touchstone. Its enduring popularity stems from a balance of expert medical information and a reassuring, empathetic tone. The authors consult a board of medical specialists to ensure accuracy, while the question-and-answer format makes complex topics approachable. Readers appreciate the non-judgmental support for all birth choices—from natural childbirth to elective epidurals. Despite the rise of pregnancy apps and online forums, this book remains a trusted go-to for its organization, depth, and reliability.

What Is 'What to Expect When You're Expecting'?

First published in 1984 and continuously updated, What to Expect When You're Expecting is the most trusted pregnancy guide for expectant parents across Canada and around the world. Written by Heidi Eisenberg Murkoff and Sharon Mazel, with a foreword by Dr. Charles J. Lockwood, this comprehensive book covers every stage of pregnancy—from preconception to the first weeks postpartum. It answers hundreds of common questions, provides week-by-week and month-by-month foetal development updates, and offers practical advice on nutrition, exercise, and emotional well-being. Whether you're a first-time parent or adding to your family, this book serves as an indispensable companion.

How to Use This Book During Your Pregnancy Journey

Many expectant parents read the book cover to cover early in pregnancy, then revisit specific chapters as needed. The month-by-month sections are designed to be read during that month for real-time relevance. The index and glossary allow quick reference for symptoms or tests. Some use the book as a journal, noting questions for their healthcare provider. It also serves as a conversation starter with partners and doulas. Because medical advice can change, consider pairing the book with your doctor's recommendations. The book itself encourages you to consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
