What Readers Are Saying

Readers across Canada are calling To Dye For a revelation. One reviewer noted that after reading, they went through their entire wardrobe to identify problematic garments. The book has been praised for its meticulous research and engaging tone—it feels like a conversation with a knowledgeable friend. Whether you have sensitive skin or simply care about what goes into your clothing, this hardcover will change your perspective.

Why This Book Matters Now

With fast fashion dominating retail and global supply chains growing ever more complex, the issue of toxic chemicals in clothing is more urgent than ever. Alden Wicker’s investigative work arrives at a time when Canadians are incregly conscious of both environmental sustainability and personal health. To Dye For fills a critical gap, empowering consumers with information that regulators and the industry have failed to provide.

What Chemicals Are Hiding in Your Clothes?

Wicker exposes the fashion industry’s shocking lack of regulation around chemical use. The book details common offenders: azo dyes that can break down into carcinogenic amines, formaldehyde resins for wrinkle resistance (known skin irritants), perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) for water and stain repellency, and phthalates—endocrine disruptors used in prints and coatings. Each chapter traces how these substances end up in our garments and the science behind their potential harm. Canadians will appreciate the focus on everyday items like jeans and t-shirts.

How Does This Affect Your Health?

Beyond the chemical list, Wicker examines real health impacts. She interviews individuals who have suffered chronic rashes, respiratory issues, and other ailments traced back to their clothing. The book delves into multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and the industry’s slow response. Readers with sensitive skin will find validation and practical advice for choosing safer alternatives. Personal stories make the science accessible and deeply human—a hallmark of Wicker’s writing.

What Can You Do to Fight Back?

To Dye For is both diagnosis and prescription. Wicker dedicates ample space to actionable steps: how to read clothing labels and identify problematic materials, which fabrics and certifications (such as Oeko-Tex or GOTS) to look for, tips for washing new clothes to reduce chemical residues, how to support transparent brands, and advocacy strategies for stricter regulations. This section empowers Canadians to become informed consumers and agents of change in their local communities.

Who Should Read This Book?

This hardcover is essential for anyone who wears clothes—which is everyone. It’s particularly valuable for individuals with sensitive skin or chemical sensitivities, fashion enthusiasts concerned about sustainability, health advocates aiming to reduce toxin exposure, parents wanting to protect their children, and policymakers interested in reforming the industry. The content is eye-opening and motivating for readers from all backgrounds.
