Key Topics Covered

This book provides a comprehensive overview of sensory processing. You'll learn about the seven senses (including proprioception and vestibular), how they work together, and what happens when the system becomes overwhelmed. Topics include:

  • Identifying sensory over-responsivity (avoiders) and under-responsivity (seekers)
  • Strategies for regulating sensory input at home and school
  • The role of occupational therapy and other professional support
  • How to create a sensory-friendly environment
  • Understanding your child's unique sensory profile

The information is presented in an accessible, parent-friendly manner, making complex neuroscience understandable without dumbing it down.

Why This Book is Essential for Understanding Sensory Processing

Every child experiences the world differently. For some, everyday sensations like touch, sound, or movement can be overwhelming or barely noticeable. This is known as sensory processing difference (SPD), and it affects countless children and families. The Out-of-Sync Child, Third Edition is the trusted resource that demystifies SPD, offering clear explanations, practical strategies, and hope. Written by renowned educator Carol Stock Kranowitz, with a preface by leading researcher Lucy Jane Miller, this book has helped millions of parents, teachers, and therapists recognize the signs of sensory challenges and respond effectively. Readers often describe it as a game changer, providing the insights they needed to support their child's development.

About the Authors

Carol Stock Kranowitz is an educator who spent over 20 years teaching children in early childhood settings. Her experiences led her to study sensory integration and become a leading voice for parent education. Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR, who wrote the preface, is a renowned researcher in sensory integration and the founder of the SPD Foundation. Together, they bring both practical and scientific expertise to this edition.

Who Should Read This Book?

This book is invaluable for parents who notice their child struggling with meltdowns, picky eating, or difficulty with transitions. It's also a must-read for teachers, pediatricians, and therapists seeking a deeper understanding of sensory needs. Many readers share that the book was a turning point in their journey, validating their observations and giving them a roadmap forward. Whether your child has a formal diagnosis or you're simply curious about sensory processing, this book offers clarity and compassion.

What Makes This Third Edition Different?

The third edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the latest research and understanding of sensory processing. It includes revised terminology (now using "differences" rather than "disorder") to reduce stigma and promote acceptance. New sections address the overlap between SPD and conditions like autism and ADHD, as well as updated guidance on treatments and interventions. Parents appreciate that the book remains practical and easy to read despite its depth. The inclusion of real-life examples and checklists helps translate theory into everyday action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this book only for children with a diagnosis? No. It's for any parent or professional who wants to understand the sensory aspects of behaviour and development. Many children have mild sensory differences that benefit from the strategies in this book.

How does this edition differ from previous ones? It features updated research, new terminology, and expanded sections on co-occurring conditions and family support.

Is it suitable for older children or adults? While focused on children, the principles apply to individuals of all ages. The book can be a foundation for understanding sensory issues across the lifespan.

A Note on Professional Guidance

This book is intended for educational purposes and does not constitute medical advice. Sensory processing differences vary greatly from person to person.
